4K STEAM MACHINE! 👀
Linux 7.2 could bring the Steam Machine one step closer to a proper 4K high-refresh console experience.
• Initial AMDGPU HDMI 2.1 FRL support was merged into Linux 7.2
• FRL provides more HDMI bandwidth for higher resolutions and refresh rates
• Could help enable 4K high-refresh output on modern TVs
• Could also improve the path toward HDMI VRR support
• SteamOS recently added preliminary HDMI VRR support
• SteamOS also added initial support for upcoming Steam Machine hardware
• The new Linux feature is disabled by default for now
• Full AMD HDMI 2.1 support is not finished yet
• This improves display capabilities, but does not guarantee games will run natively at 4K
The Steam Machine was already capable of displaying 4K, but proper HDMI 2.1 support could make it much better suited for modern 4K TVs with higher refresh rates and VRR.
