As Steve Wozniak was picking up Steve Jobs from the airport couple weeks after they partnered to create a personal computers company
Steve Jobs was coming back from Oregon, specifically a place called “Apple Orchard”, Jobs was also on a fruitarian diet, and thought the name sounded “fun, spirited and not intimidating.”
Jobs suggested the name Apple to Wozniak who immediately said:
“What about Apple Records?”
Apple Records, was a subsidiary of Apple Corps Ltd. founded just 8 years prior, and owned by the Beatles, the Beatles was one of the top music bands at that time, its members were Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, and John Lennon.
Wozniak suggested names like “Matrix Electronics”
And some other computer sounding names
But Steve Jobs kept going back to “Apple Computer”
Some people suggested some of the main factors were that he wanted the company’s name to appear first in the phone book, so the name has to come before Atari, and he also wanted a name that doesn’t sound scary to the average user who distance themselves from computers sold by other companies like IBM at that time, but these are pure speculations.
Apple Computer was founded on April 1st, 1976
Not long before Wozniak fear came true when Apple Corps that was founded in 1968 sued Apple Computer over a trademark violations, Apple Corps had multiple brands at that time; Apple records for the Beatles work, Zapple records, Apple publishing, Apple Films, Apple Retail, and even created Apple Electronics.
The case got settled in 1981, where both companies agreed to stay in thier lanes, Apple computer paid $80,000 to Apple Corps agreeing not to enter the music industry, while Apple Corps agreed not to enter the electronics industry and killed their Apple Electronics brand.
But in 1989 Apple Corps sued AppleComputer again for adding MIDI and audio capabilities to their computers, Apple Computer paid $26.5M settlement, they refined the previous agreement more agreeing that Apple Corps can sell records, while Apple Computer can sell tech goods and services, they can sell audio but not in record format.
Fun fact:
In 1991, Apple designer Jim Reeks created a system alert sound named "Sosumi" that’s because whenever they came up with a name they saying that the Beatles would sue. He said: “so sue me” and pretended it was a Japanese name.
In 2001 Apple released iTunes that started yet another battle with Apple Corps, where the latter argued that Apple is breaching their agreement again, that lasted until 2006, Apple Computer argued that they are using a data transmission device and not a record label that produces and sells records, it was the first time Apple Computer won the case and didn’t have to pay Apple Corps.
In 2007 Apple wanted to end this ongoing battle every time Apple touches any audio, where the Beatles come after them, so Apple computer bought the Apple corps brand for an estimated $500M ending an ongoing battle with the Beatles.
Despite the Beatles being the most popular band, iTunes only listed the Beatles music in 2010, nearly 10 years after launching the service.
This marks a moment in history where Paul McCartney is performing at Apple Inc. HQ after a long battle with the company until he gave up the name in a major win for Apple Inc.
Now Apple Inc owns Apple Music, Apple Films, and owns what used to be a rival audio company Beats by Dre.
And Apple Music market share is 13%.
In 1977 Steve Jobs paid McKenna agency to design a new logo for Apple computer company
The only requirement Steve told graphic designer Rob Janoff was:
“Just don’t make it cute”
Rob started sketching a simplified Apple, but every drawing could be another fruit, many fruits look similar not detailed, even when he added a leaf (tomatoes, cherries, peaches… )
So he decided to add a bit because people usually bite into an apple, and that would make the design unmistakably an Apple.
It was his co worker who said:
“Clever, you added a bite because computers use Byte”
But that wasn’t his intention, it was a great coincidence thought
The rainbow colors? It was to show that this computer has colors, since Apple II computer was the only computer at that time that shows pictures in colors.
It was also to appear user friendly.
Many people are asking me about the rainbow and the Apple rainbow 🌈
So here’s the full story.
