A new milestone for automated mobility in aviation. At İGA Istanbul Airport, one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs, the Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK, automated by ADASTEC, successfully completed an operational demonstration in live apron traffic in collaboration with Turkish Airlines, İGA Istanbul Airport, and Karsan Automotive. Designed around Turkish Airlines apron workflows, the demonstration simulated crew transportation, shift mobility, and apron-area logistics across an overall 11-kilometer route. Operating across an airside route in a complex airport environment, the demonstration showcased the capabilities of SAE Level-4 automated driving technology under real operating conditions. By extending field-proven automated driving technology into one of the most demanding airport environments, this demonstration highlights how automated mobility can support safer, more efficient, and more sustainable airport operations. How does an automated bus communicate with its surroundings? Within the InterAct project, currently active across multiple deployment sites, an external human-machine interface (eHMI) is integrated into the Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK, automated by ADASTEC. Through real-time messages displayed on external screens, the vehicle clearly communicates its intent, whether it’s yielding at crosswalks, approaching a bus stop, or managing passenger boarding. This transparent communication helps bridge the gap between automated systems and human understanding, making public transportation safer and more intuitive for everyone. Developed in collaboration with Dutch Automated Mobility, AppliedAutonomy, ADASTEC, and with support from EIT Urban Mobility. Inside SAE Level-4 Automated Driving in a National Park A full-size SAE Level-4 automated bus operated at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, one of the most remote landscapes in Michigan. • No internet connection • No GNSS/GPS coverage • Miles of forest roads Over six weeks of operation, the automated bus completed more than 100 trips, covering hundreds of miles with full automation engaged, even under dense tree canopies and steep terrain. This deployment shows that automated mobility is not limited to urban environments. It can operate reliably in challenging conditions without connectivity, where consistency and accessibility matter just as much. A strong example of how SAE Level-4 automated driving performs beyond controlled environments, in real-world conditions. This blog post is authored by Cemre Kavvasoglu, North America Operations Director at ADASTEC, with Selen Kandogan as co-author, sharing key insights from the Sleeping Bear Dunes deployment.
