BLOOMBERG: Tesla Autonomy Costs 85% Less Than Waymo, Logs Bigger Safety Lead Tesla’s push toward fully autonomous driving received a boost from a new Bloomberg Intelligence analysis that concludes the carmaker is materially closer to full self-driving capability than Alphabet-owned Waymo Bloomberg analyst also says Tesla is also achieving a cost-per-vehicle for autonomy that is about 85 percent lower than Waymo. Although both systems are currently classified as Level 2, Bloomberg said Tesla’s vertically integrated manufacturing gives it a decisive hardware and scale advantage. The research estimates Tesla vehicles have logged roughly 3 billion cumulative autonomous miles, dwarfing Waymo’s 22 million. In the first quarter, Tesla recorded 0.15 crashes per million miles compared with Waymo’s 1.16 and a U.S. national average of 3.9, suggesting a potential safety edge alongside the data advantage. Bloomberg projects Tesla could field about 35,000 dedicated robotaxis by 2026, versus roughly 2,000 vehicles planned by Waymo. Supporting that outlook, Tesla on 22 June began a limited robotaxi trial in Austin, Texas, using about 10 modified Model Ys, according to Reuters.
