Meet Police Officer Kyle Beck of the 106 Precinct (far left), APO Michael Hennessy (left), and Mahesh Ramnath (right).
Kyle coordinates the Auxiliary Police Program in the 106 Precinct. Every command in the NYPD depends on our auxiliaries. They are true volunteers. They give up their time to protect and serve our city every day. They wear the uniform and bring comfort to those who see them. They assist with community events, traffic and crowd management, crime prevention initiatives, and high-visibility patrols. They do all of this without pay. Their reward is service.
When I spoke with Kyle, I reassured him of how important his mission is. I told him about APO Janet LoBianco. She was an auxiliary police officer in the 72 Precinct who died in 2004. At her services, she was dressed in her uniform. Her family told me what motivated her to become an APO.
Years earlier, she had been walking with her teenage son near the “Dust Bowl” ballfields on 65th Street when a car mounted the sidewalk. Janet was seriously injured, and tragically, her son was killed.
In her grief, she wanted to do something that mattered. She wanted to give something back to the world. She wanted to find purpose.
What did she choose?
To become an NYPD auxiliary police officer and walk the streets in the same uniform she would one day be viewed in at her funeral services.
I have told Janet’s story hundreds of times—almost every time I speak with an auxiliary officer. I told Kyle, Michael, and Mahesh her story just before we took this photo.
I thanked Kyle for what he does and reminded him that he helps give people purpose. I thanked Michael and Mahesh for the purpose they found through service.
Thank you to all of our auxiliary police officers for the purpose you have found and for the service you bring to our city. Thank you, Janet LoBianco. Bless you and your son.
