👨‍🏫🏆 UCD Professor Carel Le Roux named 2023 IRC Researcher of the Year 🔹 Professor Emma Teeling ‘highly commended’ in Researcher of the Year category The Irish Research Council has named Professor Carel Le Roux Researcher of the Year for 2023. A leading clinical scientist and expert on how the gut and brain communicate to control hunger and satiety, he was awarded the prestigious prize for his work on developing safer and more effective treatments of obesity. Director of the Metabolic Medicine Group affiliated with the UCD Diabetes Complications Research Centre (DCRC) in the UCD Conway Institute, his research has focused on the impact of diet, exercise, medication and surgery, including bariatric surgery, on enhancing gut-brain signalling for the management and treatment of the disease of obesity. Professor Le Roux was the recipient of a €600,000 IRC Laureate funding award in 2018, which he credits with enabling him to lead the development of the €16 million European project SOPHIA (Stratification of Obesity Phenotypes to Optimise Future Obesity Therapy) - which is addressing obesity and its complications such as type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. “Treating obesity as a disease and achieving substantial health benefits are now possible in part because of the grant support provided by the IRC, SFI, and the HRB,” he said. “This research area has also been prioritised by UCD, and the results are that we now better understand the science behind the cure.” Professor Emma Teeling, UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science, was highly commended in the Researcher of the Year category for her research exploring the development of bats as new models for healthy ageing and disease tolerance. A full Professor of Zoology at UCD and co-founding director of the Bat1K project, she recently received a European Research Council Synergy grant for her project ’BATPROTECT’. The IRC’s ‘Researcher of the Year’ Awards celebrate the very best IRC-funded researchers who are making highly significant and valuable contributions to knowledge, society, culture and innovation. Five UCD supervisors, mentors and research officers were awarded the ‘Research Ally’ prize, in recognition of the important work of supervising academics and research support staff behind the scenes. 🔹Associate Professor Aideen Quilty, UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice @AideenQuilty 🔹Dr Declan Fahie, UCD School of Education @DeclanFahie Associate Professor Krishna Vadlamannati, UCD School of Politics and International Relations 🔹Dr Madhusanka Liyanage, Ad Astra Fellow, UCD School of Computer Science @msankal 🔹Dr Jenny Knell, Research Manager, UCD School of Philosophy "I am delighted to see the outstanding contributions of UCD researchers recognised by the Irish Research Council. I congratulate the award winners, the highly commended researchers, and the mentors, supervisors and research officers for their commitment to research and their impact both within and beyond academia,” said Professor Helen Roche, UCD Interim Vice President for Research, Innovation and Impact. Director of the Irish Research Council, Peter Brown, said the awards were an opportunity to “to shine a light on the remarkable achievements of our top researchers and on the leading-edge work they are spearheading at national, community, European and international level”. Adding: “Their work reflects the exceptional contributions they make in their respective fields, and in finding innovative solutions and ways of improving the world and people’s lives. The Irish Research Council Researcher of the Year winners demonstrate why research matters, and of the vital need for continued support in all fields of research, from science and technology to social sciences and the humanities.”

🦇🌋 Bats and volcanoes research awarded coveted ERC Synergy Grants 🇪🇺 Warmest congratulations to Assistant Professor Claire Harnett and Professor Emma Teeling, who have each received €10 million in funding having been awarded coveted European Research Council Synergy Grants for their groundbreaking projects. Addressing if it is possible to mitigate the risk of volcanic disasters and if bats could provide the solution to health and longevity, Assistant Professor Harnett and Professor Teeling each lead teams at University College Dublin that are among 37 across Europe chosen to share in a total of €395m in funding to support ambitious research challenging the world’s most formidable problems. Professor Teeling, UCD School of Biology and Environment Science, has pioneered global research into the development of bats as new models for healthy ageing and disease tolerance. She will lead the Synergy project ‘BATPROTECT’, involving a team of 22 researchers including leading experts from Germany and Singapore, to enhance the understanding of the extraordinary lifespans of bats and their resistance to cancer and other deadly diseases including the coronavirus. Assistant Professor Claire Harnett, Ad Astra Fellow at UCD School of Earth Sciences, specialises in numerical modelling of volcanic environments. She will work with fellow ‘ROTTnROCK’ project team members from Germany, Sweden and France to advance knowledge of volcanic processes that could ultimately help to predict and mitigate the hazards of unexpected eruptions and avert many tragedies worldwide. 🗣️ Professor Helen Roche, UCD Interim Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Impact: “We are immensely proud of Professor Teeling and Assistant Professor Harnett in this achievement." “UCD is ranked number one in Ireland and 23rd among higher education institutions in Europe for Horizon Europe funding. These awards really exemplify the excellence of our outstanding researchers, who are building important international collaborations to address global challenges. I congratulate the winners and look forward to following their exciting work.” ERC Synergy Grants, funded as part of Horizon Europe, aim to support ambitious projects requiring multiple disciplinary collaborations; empowering small groups of Principal Investigators to jointly address problems that can not be tackled by their teams working alone. The 37 winning projects for 2023 involve 135 researchers across 114 universities and research centres in 19 countries across Europe and beyond. Alongside their announced ERC Synergy Grants, the UCD projects awarded 2023 funding also received proposal development funding from Enterprise Ireland through its Horizon European Funding Supports.
