12 ABY Ossus
Luke and I take the oldest Apprentices on a hike after sunset up a wide path that winds through the Eocho Mountains, with ancient steps carved in the steepest places, and coils up one of the mountains. We reach the top with a wide area used for gathering and celebrations with magnificent views overlooking the kingswood. Vast outcroppings of rock border the level lookout.
We are high enough to see breathtaking glimpses into the heart of the Eocho Mountains. From here we can see Echo River Valley, some of Sky Valley and Meadow Valley, and hints of Winter Valley. Far below us are lights of Jedi homes and the Jedi Academy is glowing in the peaceful night.
Above us the moons glow quietly and the sky is full of billions of stars. Tomorrow another group of our Apprentices will face the Jedi trials and graduate as Jedi Knights. We are having a Graduation Eve Celebration tonight. Everyone helps with tasks and a magnificent bonfire is soon built with wood we carried up.
Apprentices are roasting meats and vegetables on skewers, baking fresh breads in hot pans down in the coals. Others are laying out trays of fruits, pitchers mulled cider and hot chocolate. Spreading out blankets, picnic pillows, plates, mugs, and silverware. We sit in clutters around the lookout and take turns telling stories.
When it is Luke’s turn, he tells us a story from 4 ABY about Artoo and his Mission to Pillio. Luke felt the Force drawing him to the planet. He describes the breathtaking aquatic planet, magnificent white of rushing waterfalls, coral cliffs, labyrinth of caves, light blue pools, vivid red and gold fronds.
The day beautiful, with a rich blue sky, a congress of cumulous clouds floats above the waterfalls like puffs of cotton, and the yellow-gold sunlight is dazzling. Artoo’s exterior is gleaming from an oil bath. Luke steps up beside him, with gleaming black boots, black Jedi robes, a black tunic, gleaming black belt, and the shine of his lightsaber clipped to his belt.
Luke and Artoo are standing partway down the inside of the Falls Basin, on a gray granite and coral shelf. Lush moss lightly covers the shelf face. Beside them is Luke’s cherished Red-5 X-Wing. The shine from the brilliant sunlight and its reflection on the Falls lights up the intricate wave of Luke’s Jedi robes, the heavier knit of his tunic, the sheen of his hair, and his blue eyes.
Black granite and coral cliffs rising on either side of Luke and Artoo and a backdrop of dazzling white-blue waterfalls is behind them. They gaze out over the Falls Basin, breathing in the salty air and listening to the thundering of the falls. A Lambda-class T-4a shuttle banks overhead. Artoo beeps and whistles his concerns. Luke replies, “If the Empire is here, then what I sensed is true. There must be something special about this place.”
Luke feels the Force around them reassuring that this is where they are meant to be, and there is a continues sense of something mysterious calling to him. Artoo beeps a query. “You stay here, Artoo. Their scanners have probably spotted us.” Artoo beeps acknowledgement, wishes he could tag along, and asks Luke to be careful.
He heads off among red, orange, or yellow-tan coral, vibrant yellow and red sea lily flutes, and orange-red sea tubes. Large yellow-cream or dull orange-green sea fan coral, huge king bolete mushrooms, and a variety of smaller mushrooms rising by Luke’s shins. Vast tan-gold oyster mushrooms are tight arranged in stacks at water runoff points in the cliffs.
Luke headed toward the Emperor’s Observatory, ran into squads of stormtroopers, they did not give him a choice about fighting, and Luke had to defend himself. He deactivated his blade, continued on, traveling through a cave system of tan-gray coral and brown rocks. Slicing into a deeper passage.
A voice calls, “Hello?! Can anyone hear me?” and goes looking for the person. The passage widened into a dark chamber. There is a departed Stormtrooper propped against a rock and an alive Imperial Agent trapped in scritter amber. The Agent saw Luke walking towards him through in the sunlit passage, holding an unlit lightsaber, realized that Luke is a Jedi, and was afraid, “Who are you?”
“I heard you call out. It sounded like you needed some help,” Luke replies calmly, as an equal, in a friendly tone. Luke comes over a rise in the cave floor, gestures with his left hand to show he was responds to the Agent’s request and demonstrating that he is peaceful. The Agent calms himself because he is not in immediate danger of dying.
“Yeah, I do. You think you can get me out of this?,” he asks in acceptance of Luke’s offered help. Luke looks behind him but senses no one planning an ambush and Meek’s good heart despite his Imperial affiliation. He turns back towards the Agent and walks carefully toward him. Luke sees black rock walls, with glowing blue-white crystals scattered over its walls.
Part of deeply woven veins of mineral deposits in the fractures and fissures of the cave system. The crystals do not give off enough light to illuminate the room but they collectively dazzling the eyes. The Agent is not capable of attacking Luke because has his legs, right hand, half his torso, and his left forearm are all encased in the hardened scritter amber.
Luke asked the Imperial agent to, “Hold still,” ignites his lightsaber, and walks closer. The Agent is terrified of the emerald blade and possible ways he could die while trapped in amber. Luke carefully begins to cut the Agent free cuts through the scritter amber as sparks fly. It is a team effort because the amber has hardened into a sticky rock, tight second skin, and resists a clean cut.
The vibrations from cutting are painful to the Agent, who closes his eyes and bares his teeth in pain. As the pieces of amber far away, the Agent’s left arm is free, his torso, right arm, and last his legs. The Agent is exhausted from holding the same odd position for so long, and stumbles forward. Luke semiseriously pulls his blade back fast and steps away.
Luke shifts his blade to his right side, prevents the Agent from falling onto Luke’s emerald blade, and deactivates the saber. The Agent resumes being worried and suspicious. “I know who you are. Why did to help me?,” he asks Luke in confusion. “Because you asked,” Luke replies with another left-hand gesture of peace and communication.
Then the far wall breaks open as more scritters arrive. The Agent and Luke turn to look at the scritters swarming to attack them. Luke ignites is emerald blade again, moves into ready stance, and shifts his legs to warm them up. However, the Agent jesters for Luke to hold, “No, no, no, no, that won’t do it. This will!” because he knows that the scritters explode as liquid amber when they die.
the Agent tosses a thermal detonatorat the scritters and Luke now yells, “No wait!” But it is too late to stop the detonator before its short countdown stops and it explodes. The floor beneath them is not thick, and huge cracks form in it. Luke deactivates his lightsaber, puts his arms out from his sides, and tucks his legs in beneath him.
The chamber floor collapsing and they fell into a much taller chamber. The Agent flails as he fells and switches to falling back first. Luke maintains his center of gravity, and calls on the Force to stabilize his descent. The agent crashes into an outcropping from the wall, rolls down a slope, and lands hard in shallow water on the cave floor.
Luke still has his arms out, bends deeply at the knees, and closes his eyes. He moves his left hand in front of him, facing downward to the cave floor, and calls on the Force to absorb the speed of Luke’s descent, and lands on his feet as graceful as a jungle cat. Luke looks around and sees that they are in a vast chamber, with waterfalls and glowing blue-with crystals.
Huge boulders fall from the collapsing cave floor above and would have crushed the Agent but Luke calls on the Force to slow and catch the boulders before they can crush the Agent. The Force sings around Luke as the boulders float above the Agent and the gold and purple sea flutes that he is surrounded by.
Luke has his right hand out, is now holding his lightsaber in his lift hand, his fingers partly curled, and his teeth are gritting. He closes his eyes to concentrate harder and move his right arm, shifting as Luke tires, he gets the boulders a safe distance away and drops them. The Agent stares at Luke, as he holds his lightsaber and clips it to the left side of his belt.
The Agent gasps in pain several times, grits his teeth, and sits up painfully. Luke steps forward and offers the Agent his open right hand to help pull him up. The Agent gaps at Luke in continued surprise. He accepts the offered hand, rises straight up, with some help from Luke in maintain his balance.
Luke turns away and takes a few steps. The Agent begins in disbelief, “I’ve heard hundred stories about the Jedi. They terrified me as a buy on Coruscant, but you. . . Luke picks up the Agents blaster by its barrel and looks back at the Agent. He walks back to the Agent, “Come on. We need to work together if we’re going to get out of here.”
Luke holds out the blaster to the Agent, grip closes, raise it up to chest level, and is standing sideway behind it. The Agent is dismayed that is lined up for a heart and lungs kill shot. He carefully accepts the baster, looks disconcerted, and drops the muzzle drop right away to point at the cave floor by his right foot. The Agent could have tried to use the blaster on Luke but that would not have defeated Luke.
Luke leads the ways as they begin walking through a passage teaming with ocean fronds, flutes, sea tubes, and glowing crystals. “You’re looking for something. So am I. It seems that the Force brought us together,” he comments. “What a stroke of luck,” The Agent replies as Luke ways over an uneven floor. Imperial Agent is named Dal Meeko, a member of Inferno Squadron, and is recovering from the resent ordeals.
They are surround by plant life, pass glowing red or gold sea tubes, and oceanic moss drips from the ceiling. “I have found that there is always more to it then luck,” Luke replies. The air is tanged with salt. “Right The Force. Is that what got you passed my men or was it the lightsaber you’re carrying?” Meeko is upset about the deaths of his men.
Luke immediately apologizes, “I’m sorry.” “that’s what I thought. So why am I still alive?” Meeko asks questioning the logic of Luke fighting the stormtroopers then sparing him. Luke explains, “They did not give me a choice. You did.” Then scritters jump out at Meeko and Luke. “More bugs!,” Meeko yells. Luke ignites His lightsaber and runs ahead. “You watch my back and I will watch yours.”
Luke and Meeko are both heading for the Observatory, stay teamed up, fight many scritters along the way, and discuss their beliefs and philosophies. Eventually they reached the Observatory. The small vault can only be opened by using the Force. Meeko was disappointed by the antiques of Pillio that were stored there. Luke quickly located the one object that was the reason for having the Observatory.
It is a mysterious Jedi compass. Luke requested to keep the compass. At first Meeko is reluctant to agree and asks Luke, “Why would I let you do that?” “Because I asked,” Luke replies. Meeko agrees that Luke can keep the compass. “Thank you,” Luke replies. “I won’t stop you from destroying this facility but don’t you think this world has suffered enough?” Meeko decides to spare the facility, since the object of value was gone. Luke and Meeko walked outside into the sunlight.
“I was glad to have met you, Meeko,” Luke says. Meeko does not believe Luke and asks “Are we going to forget about all of this?” Luke replied, “I do not think that you can. There is conflict in you.” Meeko told Luke, “Of course there’s conflict in me. I’m not blind. I know what the Empire’s this capable of. But what else is there?”
Luke replies, You always have a choice.” Meeko asks, “The Rebellion?” “No. Not the Rebellion,” Luke replies. “A choice to be better. May the Force be with you.” Luke departs. Luke explains to our students that the Jedi are both warriors and pacificists. This balance exemplifies the Jedi and this an example of the Jedi Mantra.
Imperials were taught Palpatine’s lies about the Jedi. That pulled them into the conflict between the Jedi and the Sith. Meeko had been told lies about the Jedi all his life, had not example to nullify those beliefs, and followed a path of destruction. Luke compares this to the Jedi’s belief in the Eightfold Path.
The Eightfold Path
Prajna – Wisdom, discernment
1) Samma Ditthi – Right Understand/View – Seeing life as it truly is and the true understanding the Four Noble Truths. They are – 1. Dukkha – The Truth Of Suffering: Life inherently involves dissatisfaction, pain, imperfections, unpleasant experiences due to impermanence. 2. Samudaya – The Truth Of The Cause Of Suffering: Suffering arises from craving, attachment, clinging to things that are not eternal, and is fueled by ignorance. 3. Nirodha – It is possible to end suffering by letting go of craving and cling, leading to Nirvana. 4. Magga – The Truth Of The Path To The Cessation Of Suffering – The path to ending suffering is the Noble Eightfold Path, which is dived into 1 – Wisdom, 2 – Mental Discipline, and 3 – Ethical Conduct.
2) Samma Sankuppai – 1. Right Thinking/Though/Resolve/ – Following the right path in life. Cultivate positive and compassionate intentions. Be free from greed and delusion. 2. Right Aspiration – The true desire to be free of attachment, hate, and ignorance.
Sila – Virtue, Morality, Ethical Conduct
3) Samma Vaca – Right Speech – Speak truthfully, kindly, and usefully. Do not lie, criticize, condemn, use harsh words, gossip, hurtful statements, or use harsh language.
4) Samma Kammantra – Right Action/Conduct – Act ethically, promote kindness. Abstain from hurtful behaviors: such as killing, stealing, assault.
5) Samma Ajiva – Right Livelihood – Support yourself financially in a way that does not that avoids being dishonest, harming others, or hurting animals.
Samadhi – Mental Discipline
6) Samma Vayama – Right Effort – Striving to prevent unwholesome states and develop wholesome ones.
7) Samma Sati – Right Mindfulness – Being fully aware of the present moment, your body, feelings, mind, and phenomena.
8) Samma - Ajiva – Right Concentration – Developing deep focus and meditative absorption.
Purpose:
This path offers a way to live a balanced, compassionate life, integrating ethical principles with meditative practices to gain insight and freedom from the cycle of suffering.
Luke explains that when he treated Meeko as an equal it was Sila, the virtuous and moral belief that all living things must be seen as equal. Meeko being grateful for rescue then questioning why Luke saved him, was because the Empire had not taught Meeko that all life has value. Luke had simply replied, “Because you asked.”
Luke did not need to see Meeko as an enemy. Meeko did not try to fight Luke so Luke was free to treat Meeko as like any other being in the galaxy that Luke could help and guide which is Right Speak – to not tell lies. Luke and Del traveled together discussing Imperial propaganda and the truth about the Jedi.
This is Right Thought – following the right path in your life and Right Understanding – seeing life as it truly, combining these together is wisdom. Meeko and Luke working as a team was Right Action – to not take part in harmful behaviors and Right Livelihood – to support yourself without harming others or animals.
I like this tale because it shows the essence of what makes Luke so beloved. He represents everything that a Jedi should be, his compassion, selfless devotion to the Light. Luke’s approach to lightsaber combat and lightsaber philosophy, that he passed on to us to protect us. His departure from the previous order’s views of emotions, beloveds, family, and friends. Luke growing into his Force abilities as he trained to becoming a Jedi Knight.
Luke explains that the tale is an example of the Jedi Mantra – There is no emotion, there is Peace. There is no ignorance, there is Knowledge. There is no passion, there is Serenity. There is no chaos, there is Harmony. There is no death, there is the Force. The Jedi Ways is a philosophy of peace, balance, and selflessness. We use the Force for knowledge and defense, never attack.
This peaceful balance is reached through meditation, mindfulness, compassion. We have unconditional love for all life, help ours find their own paths. Let go of fear, anger, hatred, or possessiveness. We seek inner harmony, serve others, are present, understand our feelings, foster joy and freedom, we strive for harmony, avoid extremes, understand our duty, protect each other and those who need it, and make time for ourselves for the sakes of our own souls.
Luke encourages our Apprentices, “As you travel throughout the galaxy, win the trust of the people around you by dealing with their true feelings. Show with wisdom, compassion and understanding. Palpatine lied about the Jedi for decades. Do not expect all people to believe your virtuous intentions on blind faith. Let them see through your actions that you are a noble Jedi.
We are both Warriors and pacifists. Let the people decide for themselves whether our beliefs and philosophies are pure, right or wrong, and follow our beliefs themselves if they wish. Luke encourages us to have compassion of each other and continue to develop our virtues. We all need to continue walking our paths with the Force, I can only show you the Way.”
As we walk down the mountains there are many discussions of how to present ourselves out in the galaxy. They want the galaxy to see them as their true selves - noble Jedi and kind people. Many would like to do more to clear up Imperial propaganda lies about Jedi. They know it will not always be possible to find a peaceful solution with our enemies, want to protect the galaxy, and keep ourselves safe as well. We will continue to help and support each other, staying true to the Ways Of The Force.
As we reach the Eocho River Valley floor, standing under wide green branches of the old growth trees, Luke encourages all of us with one of his favorite sayings, “Remember you all here a choice. A choice to be better.” Luke and I wish everyone “Good night,” smile at all our Apprentices, Luke takes my hand, and we lead the way back through the Kingswood to the Jedi Academy.
