(1/4) The #BecketPageant & Crafts Fair this June will feature @CityofLondon Livery Companies, just like the 1519 event that inspired it. Growing from trade guilds in Saxon times ('guild' means money or payment), Livery Companies remain part of the fabric of the City to this day.

Cheapside, Becket's birthplace, was for centuries the City's main commercial street. The variety of goods and produce sold here is indicated in adjoining street names, eg Milk Street, Bread Street, Honey Lane, Wood Street, Poultry and Ironmonger Lane.

Thomas Becket was born to a merchant family in December 1119 or 1120 (900/901 years ago last month) on Cheapside in the City. A relief commemorating him can be seen on Cheapside at the corner of Ironmonger Lane, where the Becket family home once stood.

Becket was murdered on 29 Dec 1170 (850 yrs ago last week). This 1970 sculpture near St Paul's Cathedral, by Edward Bainbridge Copnall in bronze coloured fibreglass resin, marked 800 yrs. The Becket Pageant for London will mark the 850th anniversary.

The Lord Mayor's Show traditionally features Gog and Magog, two giants that are ancient mythical guardians of the City. They also stand inside Guildhall's Great Hall. Building on this tradition, the Becket Pageant for London will feature a parade with giants!
