The movie ‘ Tron: Ares ‘ hit theaters this week, and we watched it 🍿 to share our thoughts with you.
We evaluated it according to the RanXteR method, based on which it finally received a rate of 7️⃣.0️⃣8️⃣ from our Staff.
☑️ Overall Impact: 7️⃣.0️⃣ / 10
The appearance of programs in our world brings to mind those classic stories where angels, robots, androids, gods, or aliens encounter human emotions and thoughts—and in doing so, start to question what existence really means. The plot here is fairly predictable, the characters aren't overly complicated, and sometimes their motivations are a bit shaky.
Still, the themes are timely and intriguing, even if the film only scratches the surface. Visually and sonically, it's stunning. Think Pixels meets Fast & Furious, with a sprinkle of Spartacus and My Stepmother is an Alien thrown in for good measure.
‘Tron: Ares’ is fun, flashy, packed with action, humor, and even some drama and thoughtful moments. It’s entertaining for sure—but not exactly a future classic. Like most modern sequels, this one is best appreciated in the short term—think 40 days, not 40 years.
🎥 Filmmaking: 6️⃣.5️⃣ / 10
As the third film in the franchise, Ares keeps things up-to-date with its focus on artificial intelligence and the (real or imagined) dangers it might bring. In line with the studio's current values, the cast is notably diverse.
Directed by Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning (‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’), the film shows off his knack for telling stories on a grand scale. The screenwriters, who come from a background in TV, hold their own pretty well in the full-length feature world.
With Daft Punk out of the picture, the soundtrack is handled by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor, who also served as producers. Their electronic score delivers the usual quality you’d expect—its pulsing energy fits perfectly with the high-tech world and intense chase scenes.
🎭 Acting: 6️⃣.5️⃣ / 10
Jared Leto plays Ares, a program named after the god of war, but with his heavily lined eyes, sad kitten stare, and flowing hair, he might not be doing the film any visual favors.
Greta Lee feels like an odd choice after ‘Past Lives’, but surprisingly, she rocks the cool-chick persona—jumping on motorcycles and solving code like it's nothing. Evan Peters plays the typical arrogant, power-hungry billionaire, a guy whose mom promotes him to CEO while still treating him like her little boy.
As for Jeff Bridges, the filmmakers seemed so determined not to let him overshadow the rest of the cast that they jokingly sent him the script under the working title ‘The Big Lebowski 2’. His take on the older Kevin Flynn is basically what you'd expect if Obi-Wan was tripping.
🎇 Level of Visuals: 9️⃣.0️⃣ / 10
Like most sequels, this one really ups the ante visually, taking full advantage of today’s technology. The sharp design, realistic rendering, and overall aesthetic make it a blast to watch. While the first two films were set inside the computer world, here the programs enter our world in full physical form. They can see, hear, feel—yet still retain all their superhuman abilities. The futuristic vehicles they bring with them are just as overpowered, plowing through anything in their path. It's impressive on any screen, but if you get a chance to watch it on a giant LED wall or in IMAX 3D—prepare to be blown away.
