The #Leiden Weigh House (Zuid-Holland) is a historic building located on Aalmarkt street in Leiden, Netherlands. Designed by architect Pieter Post, construction began around 1657, and the building officially opened in 1659.
The Weigh House is an example of Dutch Classicism, a style characterized by symmetry, proportion, and the use of classical architectural elements. The facade features intricate stone carvings, including a relief by sculptor Rombout Verhulst depicting a weighing scene, symbolizing the building's original function.
For centuries, the Weigh House served as a central hub for merchants to weigh and trade goods, ensuring fair commerce in Leiden's bustling market. Notably, in the late 17th century, Govert Bidloo converted an attic room into an autopsy space to study human anatomy.
De overlieden van het Amsterdamse Chirurgijnsgilde (The Directors of the Amsterdam Surgeons' Guild), circa 1679.
I love that Govert Bidloo is looking over his shoulder at us. They all look like they’re up to something.
