understanding the vllm v1 engine in detail vllm is pretty much an industry standard for serving llm. i have been trying to understand the design and the code and this is my general idea for the latest v1 engine. in v0, the entire lifecycle of a request - receiving it from the user, preprocessing it, tokenizing, handling any multimodal inputs, scheduling the request, running the forward pass on the gpu, detokenizing the output, and finally returning the result all of this happened sequentially in a single process. this means the gpu sits idle every time the cpu is working. for large models the gpu dominates and you barely notice so its probably okay but for smaller models, this cpu overhead becomes the actual bottleneck, and you're wasting a significant chunk of your available throughput on work that has nothing to do with actual inference. v1 solves this by splitting the system into two separate processes that communicate via zeromq. the first process is the api that is responsible for all the cpu-heavy work - receiving user requests, tokenizing the input, preprocessing, detokenizing results, and streaming them back to the user. the second process is called enginecore, and it does one thing, run a loop that schedules requests and hammer the gpu. because these two processes run independently and communicate asynchronously through sockets and queues, the cpu work and the gpu work now happen at the same time. this overlap is the core performance win in v1. when you call generate() on an llm object, the main thread sends each prompt to enginecore via a socket. inside the enginecore process, a dedicated thread is always listening on that socket, deserializing incoming requests and pushing them into an input queue. the main enginecore reads from that queue, adds the requests to the scheduler's waiting queue, calls step() to run a forward pass, and pushes the output tokens into an output queue. a third thread picks those outputs off the output queue, serializes them, and sends them back through the socket to the client process. meanwhile back in the client process, a background thread is always reading from that return socket and populating an output queue that the main thread drains. the main thread never waits for gpu execution, it just keeps polling the output queue and processing whatever has arrived. the kv cache management system was also improved. v0 had two separate allocators one for cached (prefix-reusable) blocks and one for uncached blocks plus an evictor component that managed which cached blocks to kick out when memory got low. this three component design made the allocation logic complex and introduced overhead proportional to cache size. v1 replaces all of it with a single block pool by a doubly-linked lru free queue. every kv cache block in the system is pre-allocated at startup and linked into this queue. allocating a block is just popping from the head of the queue O(1) always. releasing a block is pushing to the tail. if the block being evicted had a hash mapping in the prefix cache table, that mapping is lazily removed at eviction time rather than eagerly at release time. the result is that the entire allocate/evict cycle is constant time regardless of how many blocks are in the system or how hot the prefix cache is. because the kv cache management overhead is now essentially zero, v1 enables prefix caching by default. in v0 there was a reason to turn it off with a 0% hit rate, the overhead of managing the cached block table actually degraded performance compared to uncached operation. in v1 that tradeoff no longer exists. prefix caching is always on, and on repeated or similar prompts you get cache hits for free. the prefix hash is computed per block using a rolling hash over the token ids, and because vllm uses prefix hashing, a single differing token early in the sequence invalidates all subsequent block hashes - so cache lookups can terminate early on a miss rather than checking every block. the scheduler is also simplified. v0 maintained three queues - waiting, running, and swapped. the swapped queue held preempted requests whose kv cache had been copied from gpu memory to cpu ram to free up vram for higher-priority requests. this cpu to gpu memory transfer was expensive. v1 deletes the swap queue entirely. when a request is preempted, its kv cache blocks are simply released back into the free queue of the blockpool and the request goes back into the waiting queue. when it gets rescheduled, it checks the prefix cache and because the block hashes are still in the cached_block_hash_to_block table there's a good chance the kv cache is still physically intact and the request can resume without recomputing anything. preemption and resumption become almost free. the v1 scheduler also drops the distinction between prefill and decode phases entirely. in v0, prefill and decode were treated as different operations with separate scheduling logic. v1 represents every request simply as 'tokens computed so far' vs 'total tokens needed.' each scheduling step tries to close this gap up to the token budget allocated. this means a long prompt can be processed in chunks across multiple steps, a decoding request that gets preempted resumes naturally, and the entire scheduling logic collapses into a single unified loop. this is also why chunked prefill is always enabled by default and should ideally give you a better performance.

The account hasn't tweeted since it minted out, and the gitbook page is now redirecting to another project. BLOK•AI•ANAKOIN - A "protocol" generated by AI to create a more decentralized token issuance standard with a non-arbitrary supply amount by using BLOCK TIME as the determining factor in how many tokens can be minted.
