Those cultures assigned special terms to the people who lived as the opposite gender. They didn’t change the words for men and women.

So, old-fashioned systematised sexism & homophobia. The biological determinism of Gilead w/an autogynephilic twist. I can see how such a dystopia would lead to 'assigning' sex based on stereotypes.

Oh I agree that being an ancient culture doesn't confer validity upon its homophobia. I thought you were implying the it did.
Genderologists keep saying "gender isn't the same as sex" but never say what 'gender' IS or why it should dictate falsification of identity documents.

And what’s its job?
To position women & men as subsets of their own sex class.
To imply trans-identified males are a subset of the female sex class when they are a subset of the male sex class.
They also use racism to the same purpose.

Famously in Latin cisalpine Gaul was that part of Gaul on the same side of the Alps as Rome & transalpine Gaul on the opposite side.
It’s true that transwomen are the opposite of women though.
