If anyone’s curious, the thing that got me involved in online fandoms in the first place was Beast Wars: Transformers.
It was at the tail end of the show when Beast Machines was about to start. I had just gotten a WebTV (I didn’t have a computer, and yes, it used the phone line, so we couldn’t make or take phone calls while I was using the internet), and I REALLY wanted to talk about the show. I’d heard about JMS using the internet to talk to fans about Babylon 5, so I thought I’d go in search on the World Wide Web for chatty rooms like that to talk about Beast Wars.
That search led me to BotTalk, which I was promptly banned from once Beast Machines started airing and all the Beast Wars fans were angered by how much it sucked. 🤣 As it turned out, one of the show writers for Beast Machines, Bob Skir, was active on BotTalk. So the BotTalk admin Renaud Lefebrvvrrvreberve went out of his way to suck up to him by banning any critics of the show.
After that I went over to the Allspark with the couple hundred other fans who’d been blocked en masse by Renaud, and from there I looked for similar sites for other fandoms. That’s when I found the ongoing trash fire which was the official GW message boards, where poor Adrian Wood was getting eviscerated on the daily, before moving over to Portent and later Warseer after GW shut that message board down. If you were ever active on any of those message boards during those times then you’ve probably heard from me. Then, as now, I had a lot to say on a lot of things (For instance, you would’ve seen me banging the drum asking for Imperial Knights in 40K on the regular, years before Imperial Knights actually showed up).
I also found myself on the official D&D message boards, where I successfully convinced a designer to kill off Tyr in the 4th edition Forgotten Realms and elevate Torm to Greater God position (although I was less than enchanted with al the other changes 4E made to the Forgotten Realms). I was also on the DC Comics message boards where I was a part of HEAT. I’d argue with Kyle Rayner fans every day and demand the return of Hal Jordan, which eventually paid off with Green Lantern: Rebirth, one of the greatest comic miniseries of all time, and so on.
So if anyone’s curious why I can be so intransigent at times, it’s due to long experience and force of habit. And you can thank Beast Wars for that. 😂
