To learn all about David Friedman you can check out our Anarchists' Brainbase we're working on building! anarchast.com/brainbase/peop…

Did you know that David Friedman was a Ph.D. in theoretical physics, and never took a single for-credit course in economics or law—yet he still became a leading scholar in both fields through independent study? Badass.

To learn all about Lysander Spooner you can check out our Anarchist's Brainbase we've been working on: anarchast.com/brainbase/peop…

Did you guys know that Big Spoon self-studied his way to being a lawyer and when met with a government requirement for non-graduates to apprentice for 5 years rather than only 3 for college men, he just did it anyway at 3. Openly challenging the courts on it, he won, and the law was repealed in 1836. He viewed licensing laws as naked class legislation—“no one has yet ever dared advocate, in direct terms, so monstrous a principle as that the rich ought to be protected by law from the competition of the poor.”

I 100% agree! I couldn’t have built brainbase without it. 1000x more reliable than the claw

Nathan Cavanaugh (Nate), 28, grew up in Pittsburgh in an entrepreneurial family. He started a website design business in high school, enrolled at Indiana University Bloomington (inspired by Mark Cuban), but dropped out after founding and selling an esports platform called Guuf. He co-founded Brainbase (IP/trademark management software) at 19 from his dorm, raised $8-12M, served clients like BuzzFeed/Sanrio, and made Forbes 30 Under 30 (Enterprise Tech 2021). Brainbase was acquired in 2022. He then co-founded FlowFi (accounting/CFO services for startups), which hit seven-figure ARR quickly. No prior gov't experience. His private-sector tech/fintech track record aligning with efficiency and innovation goals brought him into DOGE as a staffer in 2025.

His father is Pat Cavanaugh, a serial entrepreneur from the Pittsburgh area, former captain of the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) Panthers basketball team, and founder/CEO of Ready Nutrition, a sports nutrition company with athlete partnerships (e.g., Giannis Antetokounmpo, Aaron Donald). Nate has publicly credited growing up in an entrepreneurial family—interning at his dad's companies from a young age—as a big influence on his own path (he dropped out of Indiana University Bloomington around age 19 to co-found Brainbase, an IP licensing platform, later FlowFi, and more recently Special).
