Who should be the next Head Coach of the Indian Men’s National Football Team?
Here’s our detailed assessment of the final shortlisted names. ⬇️
🔸 Stephen Constantine
The most familiar name on the list. Has already coached India in two separate stints—took India from 173 to 97 in the FIFA rankings.
✅ Understands the Indian football ecosystem.
✅ Knows the psychological and physical limitations of Indian players.
✅ Can adapt to the existing infrastructure.
✅ Won’t waste time adjusting—can start from Day 1.
Criticism? His long-ball style—but that may suit the resources we have.
🔸 Khalid Jamil
First Indian coach to take an ISL team (NorthEast United) to the semis. Highly respected and technically sound.
✅ Knows Indian players well.
✅ Tactical mind with experience in the I-League and ISL.
However…
❌ NT football is a different pressure zone.
❌ At club level, foreign players often support the core—here, he won’t have that luxury.
❌ Might need more time than available to shape a competitive team.
🔸 Štefan Tarkovič
Ex-Slovakia national team coach. Managed the side during Euro 2020.
✅ UEFA-level pedigree.
✅ Knows how to handle high-stakes games.
BUT…
❌ Slovakia is currently ranked 52. India is at 133.
❌ Style mismatch—technically gifted players vs developing players.
❌ Likely to face cultural & infrastructural shock.
❌ May need at least a year to fully settle and implement his ideas.
📌 Our Recommendation:
➡️ Stephen Constantine is the best fit for now.
He’s been here, done that.
He’ll complain less, deliver more.
And most importantly, he knows how to get results within our limitations.
And remember, for those unhappy with “long ball” tactics: Style comes after results.
With the squad we have, results matter most.
