The Beginning:
That first time I took the controls and actually FLEW an airplane...I still remember the exact moment.
Cleared for takeoff, full throttle, the little Cessna 172 surged down the runway at Hondo, Texas, like it couldn't wait another second. The nose lifts, the wheels kiss the pavement goodbye, and suddenly — you're not driving anymore. You're flying! I’d never, ever, flown before.
The ground drops away, the horizon opens up, and your stomach does this wild flip that turns into the biggest, dumbest grin of your life.
Wind rushing, engine roaring, hands on the yoke feeling every little bump on the air. The world shrinks into a living map below you — cars like ants, rivers like silver threads. For those first few minutes, it felt illegal. Like I’d hacked reality and stolen super powers.
I laughed out loud in the headset like a kid on Christmas. Heart pounding, pure joy mixed with “holy crap I’m actually doing this.” Nothing — and I mean NOTHING — compares to that first solo moment when you bank the wings and the whole sky becomes your playground.
If you’ve never done it, fix that immediately. Best rush on planet Earth. ✈️
