One of the biggest misconceptions about Auroville is that participation means endless meetings, endless debates, endless opinion polls. The Mother said: “All who live there will participate in its life and development.” Participation does not mean everyone does the same thing. It means each person contributes according to their capacities and means. Some build roads. Some teach. Some farm. Some work in administration. Some care for parks and green areas. Some maintain security. Some manage infrastructure. Some serve through art, research, healing, or community work. A city is not built through perpetual discussion. A city is built when people take responsibility for their part of the work and do it well. A big problem of Auroville today is that there are 100s of its so called residents who do absolutely NOTHING but be part of planning and hosting exhibitions in Chennai about how their version of Auroville and their lifestyles are under threat. The platform for true participation remains open. Anyone who wishes to contribute constructively is welcome. Come, join, work, build. Carry files. Staple papers. Print, scan, organize. Pick up a crowbar. Deal with the processes of the Government of India and help us to find a way to work together. Talking on social media is the easiest thing - what about work? Yes it’s hard… but you were not called here to do the easy thing. At the same time, we must be honest about reality. A small but vocal section has actively opposed development through obstruction, frivolous litigation, interference at work sites, intimidation, vandalism, and in some cases even violence. These are not matters of opinion; they are matters of record. And the beauty is that the narrative on social media is that they are the victims. Victims of what? Victims of an actual implementation of a project that Mother dreamt of a long long time ago. Acknowledging this reality does not close the door to collaboration. On the contrary, it only makes genuine collaboration possible. Auroville was never meant to be governed by politics, factions, or endless campaigning. Anyone who has read a page or two of The Mother will know this. It was meant to be built through work, responsibility, goodwill, and a shared aspiration for the future. Less agitation. Okay, fine — let’s say the legislation has always existed and the goal now is simply to enforce it. But the existence of a law alone does not automatically justify enforcing it without considering present-day realities and consequences. If there were a law tomorrow that said people should stop breathing, would we enforce it simply because it exists? Of course not. While that may sound extreme, the principle still applies here: laws must evolve with society, industries, and innovation. And the truth is, Ghana’s tech industry is not even fully developed yet — we are only just evolving. This is still a growing ecosystem filled with young innovators, startups, creators, and entrepreneurs trying to build solutions, create jobs, and compete globally. Applying outdated frameworks to such a fragile and emerging industry will not strengthen it — it risks slowing growth before the ecosystem even reaches its full potential.
