124 Indie Games: A Look into the Philippines GameDev Expo
From July 24 to 27, 2025, I had the opportunity to visit the Philippines for the first time to attend PGDX โ the
@phgamedevexpo. This event has a relatively short history, having only begun in 2023 as an online showcase. In 2024, it transitioned into a physical event, allowing people to meet in person, and this yearโs edition marked its most ambitious outing yet.
PGDX isnโt the first gaming event to take place in the Philippines. Theyโve hosted gaming events for over a decade โ but most of them focused heavily on esports competitions. PGDX represents a major shift in the local gaming landscape, as it's built specifically for game developers.
And notably, PGDX isnโt about promoting titles from major global publishers operating in the region. Instead, itโs an event for indie game developers to showcase their own creations.
Whatโs truly surprising is how the number of indie games on display has increased dramatically each year.
In 2024, the event featured 70 indie game booths.
In 2025, that number climbed to 124 booths.
I asked the event organizer, who is also the president of the Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP), Mr. James Ronald Lo, how they had the confidence to host an event with over a hundred indie games.
His response?
"Of course we're confident! Do you know we had over 200 game submissions? But we simply didnโt have enough space, so we had to cap it at 124."
Over the three days I spent at the event, walking the floor and interviewing people involved โ from the organizers and the association, to the media and everyday gamers โ I was struck by just how capable our neighboring country is when it comes to driving rapid growth in its game development industry.
Of course, success on the surface is just that โ the surface. What truly matters is understanding what lies beneath: the real factors and mechanisms that made this growth possible.
Thereโs so much more to discuss. If youโre interested in a deeper dive, Iโll be sharing a link to a conversation between me and Bas from
@fairplay_games, who also attended the event. Hopefully, it will help us better understand the forces behind this impressive movement. (Apologies to our international friends, it is hosted in Thai)
And to our friends in the Philippines who may come across this article โ sincere congratulations. Hereโs to seeing the Southeast Asian game industry continue to flourish. You have our full support.
