I still remember my first promotion in the USAF. January 1998. One new stripe. 𝐀𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 $𝟏𝟏𝟐 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡. Most Airmen spent it fast— takeout, outfits, weekends out. But I’ve never handled money the way everyone else did. “If I’m getting more money… shouldn’t it be growing, not going?” So I walked from Blanchard Barracks on Bolling AFB straight to my bank and asked, “What are your CD rates?” CDs were paying 4–5%, so I took a small piece of that raise and locked it into a CD. Nothing fancy. Just a simple choice that 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 that came after. While I was an Airman by rank, the commissioned officer in my heart was already pushing forward. If I could grow my money, maybe I could grow me, too. So I walked into the Education Office and signed up for my first college class!
