The Government of Uganda has repatriated two women believed to be wives of Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) leader Joseph Kony, along with their children, from the Central African Republic (CAR).
The women were yesterday received at the UPDF Airbase in Entebbe after arriving from Bangui, CAR. They were escorted back to Uganda by the Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security (CDIS), Major General Richard Otto.
The returnees include Ugandan national Ikol Grace, 33, and her two children, Ayuma Maria, 8, and Oryema Bosco, 2. Also repatriated was South Sudanese national Aniyessi Teregina, 33, who was carrying one of Kony’s orphaned children aged two years.
According to authorities, Ikol Grace was abducted in 2003 at the age of 10 from Amuria District, while Aniyessi Teregina was kidnapped in 2006 at the age of 13 from Yambio in Western Equatoria State, South Sudan. Officials said arrangements will be made to facilitate her return to South Sudan.
Reports indicate that eight of Kony’s wives and 13 children escaped from LRA captivity in January this year after their camp was attacked by an armed group near the borders of CAR, Sudan, and South Sudan, south of Darfur.
The other women, who are citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo and CAR, together with their children, were reunited with their families in their respective countries.
Between 2023 and 2024, more than 150 former LRA captives, including some of Kony’s wives and children, were returned to Uganda from CAR after escaping from captivity.
