「Common Risk Factors in Cryptocurrency」を読みました。 暗号資産市場におけるリターンの違いは、「市場全体の動き」「サイズ（時価総額）」「モメンタム（過去の価格トレンド）」の3つのファクターで網羅的に説明できる！という研究です。 こちらの研究です。 Yukun Liu, Aleh Tsyvinski, Xi Wu, Common Risk Factors in Cryptocurrency, The Journal of Finance (SSRN), 2021, ssrn.com/abstract=3379131 【概要】 株式市場で実績のある24の価格・市場関連の指標を暗号資産市場のデータに適用し、有効な投資戦略とリスク要因を特定した研究。 2014年初頭から2020年7月までの期間において、時価総額100万ドル以上のコインの収益率を対象に包括的な分析を実施。 【分析1：有効な10の投資戦略】 24の特性に基づいて五分位のポートフォリオを作成し、ロング・ショート戦略（上位グループを買い、下位グループを空売りする手法）を検証。 結果として、時価総額、価格、最高値、過去1〜4週間のモメンタム、価格×取引量、価格×取引量の標準偏差など、10の指標で統計的に有意かつ大きな超過リターンが得られることを発見。 たとえば、最も時価総額の小さいコインを買い、大きいコインを売る戦略では、週あたり5.8%の超過リターンを記録。 また、過去に値上がりしたコインを買い、値下がりしたコインを売るモメンタム戦略でも約3%の週次超過リターンを記録。 【分析2：暗号資産の3ファクターモデル】 これら10の戦略から得られる利益が、より根本的な少数の要因で説明できるかを主成分分析なども用いて検証。 暗号資産市場全体の動き（CMKT）のみを用いた単一ファクターモデルでは、横断的なリターンの違いを説明できなかった。 そこで、市場ファクターにサイズファクター（CSMB）とモメンタムファクター（CMOM）を加えた「暗号資産3ファクターモデル」を構築。 このモデルで調整すると、10の戦略の超過リターンはすべて統計的に有意ではなくなり、3つの要因で市場のリターンを網羅的に説明できることが判明。 【分析3：サイズ効果のメカニズム】 なぜ時価総額の小さいコインが高いリターンを生むのか（サイズ効果）を調査し、2つの可能性を提示。 第一に、流動性プレミアムの観点。小型コインは価格が低く非流動性が高いため、裁定取引のコストが高いコインや市場のボラティリティが高い時期ほどサイズプレミアムが大きくなる。 第二に、キャピタルゲインと利便性のトレードオフ。大型コインは取引の利便性が高いため期待されるキャピタルゲインが低くなり、実際にビットコインの取引量が多い時期にサイズプレミアムが大きくなることを確認。 【分析4：モメンタム効果のメカニズム】 なぜ過去のトレンドが継続するのか（モメンタム効果）を調査。 暗号資産のモメンタム効果は、株式市場とは対照的に、時価総額が中央値以下のグループでは機能せず、上位グループ（大型コイン）でのみ強力に機能することを発見。 これは、投資家の注目を集めやすい銘柄ほど「過剰反応」が起きやすいという行動ファイナンスの理論と一致。実際にGoogle検索数などで測る投資家の注目度が高い銘柄・時期ほど、モメンタム効果が強くなることを確認。 【分析5：既存の株式ファクターモデルとの比較】 ファーマ・フレンチの3ファクターモデルや5ファクターモデルなど、株式市場における伝統的なリスクファクターを用いて暗号資産のリターンを説明できるかも検証。 結果として、株式市場のファクターモデルでは暗号資産の横断的なリターンの違いを説明できず、暗号資産市場が既存金融市場から独立してセグメント化されていることが示唆された。 【分析6：取引コストと多重仮説検定の堅牢性】 実際の取引手数料やビッド・アスク・スプレッドを考慮したシミュレーションを実施。流動性の高い上位20コインに限定した場合でも、ロング・ショート戦略の約60%のリターンがコスト控除後も残存することを確認し、戦略の実現可能性を裏付けた。 さらに、24もの指標をテストしたことによるデータマイニングの懸念に対しても、厳しい多重仮説検定（k-FWER等）をクリアしており、結果が単なる偶然の産物ではないことを証明。 【まとめ】 暗号資産市場の価格変動は決してランダムやデタラメではなく、「サイズ」と「モメンタム」という明確なリスクファクターによって大部分が説明可能である、という結論。 暗号資産特有のファンダメンタルズ（利便性）や投資家の注目度（過剰反応）が価格形成に影響を与えており、標準的な資産価格理論を新興のデジタル資産クラスに適用するための重要な定型事実を確立した内容です。

Continuing our recognition of the 2026 CSMB Fellows from the Banff conference, we offer congratulations to Dr. Reinhart Reithmeier, who is internationally recognized for his research on membrane proteins in health and disease, and his contributions to mentorship and education.

Among the highlights of #CSMB2026 in Banff was the recognition of this year’s CSMB Fellows, beginning with Dr. David Andrews. Dr. Andrews is recognized for his research on apoptosis and mitochondrial biology, as well as his leadership within the Canadian biosciences community.

Another highlight from #CSMB2026 in Banff: congratulations to Dr. Kieran Campbell, recipient of the 2026 CSMB New Investigator Award. This award recognizes outstanding early-career researchers whose work is already making significant contributions to bioscience in Canada.
