I showed The Rocketeer to my kids the other day. I didn't recall it being so violent. Lots of gunfights, plus threats/hints of torture and sexual assault...I may have jumped the gun a bit with my almost 7yo. It is a pretty solid film though. Takes its core concept seriously, and doesn't cartoonify it the way most modern movies would. What does cartoonify mean? It means when the guy is in a jam, he really is in a jam, and has to use the resources at his disposal, and real-world physical laws, to get out of it. Crashing hurts. Heat hurts. The only time this doesn't apply is when you have 10 FBI guys shooting up one house with three people in it and hitting nothing. That part was overdone. But the actor masquerading as a Nazi agent is quite effective and gave some fun movie-within-a-movie moments, and I think the historical setting makes the story much more interesting, because a rocket pack today wouldn't be as wondrous as it would have been back then. I think this also puts some distance between reality and fiction for the kids, because nothing in the movie looks like it looks today, including weapons, clothing, and even most behaviors. Plus, Jennifer Connolly at her best, holding her own as the only significant female character in the movie. She knocks it out.
