Congrats to the Knicks. The better team won. I'm not a Knick fan, but wanted them to win because they proved they deserved it. I love seeing people perform under pressure, and they delivered over and over. Well done.

Just had 'the talk' with my 11yo. Not our first time visiting the topic, but we went pretty far this time. It's actually not that hard to talk about once you get into it, because your kids want to know about this stuff. Things every parent should do. I do a lot wrong, but I'm determined to do this part right.

Re-watched The Game with Michael Douglas last night. Have you seen it? People who criticize this film focus too much on specific plot elements. This is an incredible film because of the character transformation he goes through - as a direct and intended result of what the game forces on him. One of the most profound scenes is when he visits his ex-wife - the woman he dissed and openly loathed earlier in the movie - and tells her this: "You're the only person I can trust right now." This happened by design. The game makers wanted him to face the relationships he'd been neglecting and avoiding for years, which is what his father did before ending his life at age 48 - the same age as Douglas here - and this is what it took to get him there. The story is about a man rediscovering the essential value of human relationships over work. The game is just the method by which this happens. So if you're overly fixating on the specific elements of the game, and how this is or isn't 'believable' - you are missing the heart and the point of the movie. Give it another watch, and pay attention to the human story at the center of it.

Okay, I may actually have to admit something. Maybe Hollywood is, very slowly, starting to figure out this movie thing again. Just saw my second big budget film this year that was genuinely good. The Sheep Detectives - yes I have kids - was a terrific film. Smart, funny, unpredictable, heartfelt, some great character and thematic moments, Hugh Jackman in a great role. It's basically Knives Out but with a sheep in place of Benoit Blanc. And that makes it .... better.

I watched Hurt Locker for the first time last night. It was about what you'd expect - tense, very well-made, a unique story about how the war in Iraq would have felt for bomb-techs. I liked Renner's character - his calm under pressure. At ease with dying. And, I also don't think I ever need to see it again. Kind of how I've felt with most of Bigelow's films. Very well done, but not very rewatchable. Point Break might be the exception. One thing about this movie though - the title is never referenced in the film. I believe the title refers to Renner himself. He stores the pain and hurt deep in his heart and is able to lock it away and do his job. The other soldiers aren't.

Why does technology suck? A site I worked on for years and that has hundreds of pages is apparently just gone. Some error page is up. I can't even log in to the back end. No warning sent. No reason given. No directions for what to do. Tech people - why does your industry suck, and why in the world are you paid so well to make a product that's so horrifically pathetic?

My work thought it smart to have a smartphone, and dumb not to have one. So they required me to get a smartphone. But I outsmarted them and got a dumbphone. It does all the same smart things a smartphone does, but none of the dumb things.

What does a guy gotta do to get his meme out there? Do you know how long this took to set up?

See, it's okay to put a strong female protagonist in a story. Any story. You just have to make her human. That means believable. She can have exceptional skills. Just make her believable, and everyone - including men - will love it. I did that in Future In Doubt. You should read it. See my pinned post.

Truer things have rarely been said.
Want original stories instead of weird bastardizations? Read indie.

I concur. This is why I don't sell books for $1. Everyone else in the process gets paid. I get paid too. That's how the world works.
Whether you agree with his (self-admittedly) cantankerous opinions, Harlan Ellison was truly a force to be reckoned with. I think about this interview often — especially when young writers ask me how to make a living as one.

My 11yo just found a contradiction in The Sound of Music. The kids all tell Maria they can't sing. But the night before, the oldest girl was prancing around with 'Rolf' singing about 16 going on 17. How is my kid catching stuff like this?

Showed my kids the first hour of Sound of Music last night. We'll finish it hopefully tonight. I haven't seen this in years. It really is a great movie. This is one of the most fun parts of having kids - getting to show them all these great movies.

Every X-Files episode: Crazy event happens. Mulder presumes supernatural explanation. Scully questions Mulder about evidence. More crazy stuff happens. Scully gets confronted with something she can't explain. Mulder figures out the real explanation. Scully half-heartedly goes along but still isn't sure. The case gets solved well enough for the brass. All the evidence gets lost. And that's why the show is so good!!!
Just Hugh Laurie eloquently destroying another clueless "journalist". What a perfect start to the week.

2nd book in the War Virus series: What happens when two warring human civilizations land on a planet with a primitive alien race that doesn’t approve of their war? It doesn’t take long for the Waens to decide that they will kill whichever Human faction emerges as the victor on their planet. Unless the Humans kill them first. Do you agree with Lloyd Christmas?

My sci-fi: Stories people actually want to read because they're authentic to human nature, about something, and well-paced with unpredictable story lines.

Oooh.. Oooh. I got it. We have two universes with at least 20 superheroes in each, which is way more than you can effectively use in a single narrative. So let's combine them! Because then we'll have 40 superheroes! In one movie!! About 3 minutes of screen time for each
🤣🤣🤣🤣Why?????????🤣🤣🤣🤣
