Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserve partnered with Ocean Aid 360 for a marine debris cleanup in Cedar Key, removing hundreds of pounds of hurricane debris — including netting, barrels, crab traps and more! Many of the materials found in the cleanup will be repurposed by Once Was Lost based in St. Augustine. The post that got @FLskywatchers banned from Facebook - I want to say for everyone who has been following the Florida Sky Watchers page for years and also for the newest followers of the page, this Hurricane Helene might just be one of the most devastating hurricanes I have ever seen in my lifetime. Not only have we seen the entire state of Florida impacted along the West Coast from Naples all the way to Tallahassee, but we are seeing major devastation inland as well. The storm did not stop in Florida. Over the early morning hours, the hurricane continued into Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina where rivers have overflowed, dams have broken, and entire towns and cities are getting wiped off the map from catastrophic floods. Right now an estimated 4 million without power throughout the Southeast and many completely stranded without any means of travel or communication, power or potable water. This hurricane will go down as the most catastrophic hurricane ever experienced in the United States. And something else to think about. A storm that wasn't even a tropical cyclone in the Carribean Sea developing into a Category 4 storm in less than 48 hours? Major storm surges in Cedar Key of 10' and other parts of Taylor County estimated to be more than that. And this was what the storm looked like at the exact moment it made landfall.
