Is that your total rates bill or your waste bill? I believe that $550 a quarter covers a lot more than just waste. Domestic waste charges should be under a seperate line on the bill. You're right that Cleanaway or Veolia physically drives the trucks, but they are operating on a massive municipal contract negotiated at a corporate scale which brings down the costs significantly.

Its not a steal. Our rates are approx $550 a quarter. Thats about 2k a year. The council contracts waste management out to private companies. Like Veiola or Cleanaway. You get a coupke of free trips to tge dump a year after that you have to pay.

A record $1.1 million fine has been dealt to waste management company Cleanaway over a horrific crash that claimed two lives at the bottom of the South-Eastern Freeway almost 12 years ago. The August 2014 crash killed Jacqui Byrne and Tom Spiess while Cleanaway employee Darren Hicks and motorist Louise Compton suffered life-changing injuries. The company was fined for failing to properly train the truck driver who lost a leg as a result of the crash.

#Breaking: Waste company Cleanaway has been handed a $1.1 million fine over a fatal truck crash on the South-Eastern Freeway more than a decade ago. Truck driver Darren Hicks - who lost a leg in the crash in 2014 - had charges dropped against him and provided evidence against his former employer, saying he did not receive adequate training to drive heavy vehicles. After several appeals, Cleanaway Operations was found guilty on two counts of failing to comply with its health and safety duty. For the latest developments, watch 10 News Adelaide from 5pm.

As for rubbish collection, there's a yearly levy you pay to council to gain access to cleanaway services. Then you contact cleanaway, sign another contract and pay another yearly subscription fee to actually get bin and have them collected. More double dipping.

(RMS) News Miners (Australia/U.S) FIFO camp operator expects coal price recovery to spur business North America-based Civeo Corporation hopes a rebound in the price of coking coal will be sustained, and further boost demand for both its mining camps and its earnings in Australia. Civeo bought an additional four Queensland accommodation camps for 'fly-in, fly-out' mine workers during 2025, which helped lift its Australian division's profts by 18 per cent to US51.9m ($74.1m). Data from S&P Global Platts shows that the price of coking was fetching $US220 per tonne in early March, compared with $US172 per tonne in July 2025. Fans chanted his catchphrases, finished his lines, and sent his debut shirt to No. 1 on WWE Shop, topping the charts just days after a quiet Elimination Chamber debut. With SmackDown's main event seeing Cody Rhodes win the Undisputed WWE Championship from Drew McIntyre, Danhausen's antics fit perfectly into the WrestleMania 42 hype heading to Las Vegas. (RMS) Newsfeed War/Oil U.S. Grants India 30-Day Waiver for Stranded Russian Oil The Treasury issued a temporary 30-day waiver Friday for cargoes loaded before March 5, aiming to keep global oil markets supplied as Iran's actions halt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a route for 20% of world oil. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called it a short-term measure with minimal benefit to Russia, urging India to buy more U.S. oil amid record American production. Indian opposition leaders decried it as a blow to sovereignty, while the government stayed quiet; prices surged with Brent near $87 per barrel. So-called HALO stocks have limited exposure to the war in Iran or AI disruption. Dion Hershan from Yarra Capital says the trend towards HALO stocks is a reaction to the "fear and panic" that has beset inancial markets due to factors such as the Iran conflict, inflation and AI technology. Morgan Stanley analysts Rob Koh and Samanthie Edie have identified Cleanaway Waste Management and Auckland International Airport as the best Australian-listed HALO stocks. (RMS) News Biz/Politics/Trade/Transport 'Profit gouging': anger at container surcharge Australian exporters have accused France-based shipping company CMA CGM of price gouging after it responded to the Iran conflict by imposing an 'emergency conflict surcharge' on shipping containers. News (Last Wednesday) Cryptos/Politics/World Crypto: An encouraging rebound in a bear market Market Overview The crypto market cap rose 4.8% to $2.45 trillion, then climbed to $2.50 trillion at the end of the day on Wednesday, a four-week high. This is a strong indication of a base forming and a reversal to growth. The capitalisation level is approaching the 50-day moving average, below which it has been steadily trading since the end of January. Consolidation above this line could be an additional signal of a reversal to growth. On the other hand, this may be just a corrective rebound, as the typical Fibonacci correction range suggests a rebound to £2.53T for the decline since January and to £2.92T as part of a technical recovery from the entire decline since the October peak. Thus, despite the encouraging momentum, this may be nothing more than a rebound in a bear market. Bitcoin rose to $74K, breaking through the resistance area of the last four weeks with an encouraging surge. We attribute the magnitude of the short squeeze to the confidence of bears who pulled their stops too close to the market price. The recovery lost momentum near the 61.8% level of the January-February decline and just short of the 50-day moving average. Simply put, the bulls still have to convince the community that the bear market is over. The market is cooling after a mid-week surge, consistent with the trend of large capital selling on the growth. The price jump is generating impressive speculative interest, allowing large players to carefully sell larger volumes over a long period without putting excessive pressure on the price. Bitcoin is cautiously retreating for the second day to $70.5K, having encountered resistance and exhausted its growth momentum from the liquidation of short positions a couple of days ago. Short-term obstacles to growth are the 50-day moving average and the 61.8% level of the decline from 14 January to 6 February. Bears are proving that they are in control, keeping Bitcoin within the correction range. In such conditions, there is a higher chance of movement towards the lower end of the range, which can be called typical behaviour for the end of the week in recent months. The start of March has been quite successful for Ethereum, with gains after six weeks of decline. Particularly encouraging is the ability of the second-largest cryptocurrency to rebound from the long-term support level of the uptrend and attempt to consolidate above $2,000. Our attention here is focused on the $2,500 area, where the 200-week moving average is located. Consolidation above this level promises to be a prelude to a sustained recovery. News War, AI jitters drive switch to 'old economy' A growing number of equity market strategists are recommending that investors buy shares in companies that have 'heavy assets and low obsolescence'. The levy will range from $US2,000 for 20-foot dry containers to $US4,000 for refrigerated or special equipment containers, and will apply to all containers that are shipped to or from the Middle East. CMA CGM has advised that it will apply to all bookings that have been made since 2 March, as well as cargoes that have either yet to be shipped or are already in transit. CMA CGM owns Australia's ANL shipping line. (RMS) News Gaming/Gambling The Star's ex-CEO loses career gamble The Federal Court has found that The Star Entertainment Group's former CEO Matt Bekier had broken the law by failing to deal with money-laundering risks. Justice Michael Lee has made a similar finding against the casino group's former chief legal and risk officer Paula Martin. However, he has ruled that the Australian Securities & Investments Commission had failed to prove that seven of The Star's former directors had breached their duties of care and diligence; nevetheless, he said they should have been more active in ensuing that the company's business was being conducted ethically and lawfully. Bekier and Martin are potentially facing penalties of up to $1m. (RMS) News Media (Australia) 'Kyle will definitely sue': Sandilands and ARN face ugly legal stoush Multiple sources within ARN Media have indicated that controversial KIIS FM breakfast host Kyle Sandilands will pursue legal action against the radio group if his contract is terminated. ARN suspended Sandilands for 14 days after his on-air altercation with long-running co-host Jackie 'O' Henderson was deemed to have breached his service agreement. One source has stated that the issue is not what Sandilands said to Henderson but the consequence of those words; Henderson has refused to work with Sandilands again, which means the duo cannot fulfil their contracts to deliver the Kyle & Jackie O Show. News Cryptos/Politics/World Crypto: An encouraging rebound in a bear market Market Overview The crypto market cap rose 4.8% to $2.45 trillion, then climbed to $2.50 trillion at the end of the day on Wednesday, a four-week high. ARN suspended Sandilands for 14 days after his on-air altercation with long-running co-host Jackie 'O' Henderson was deemed to have breached his service agreement. News Cryptos/Politics/World Crypto: An encouraging rebound in a bear market Market Overview The crypto market cap rose 4.8% to $2.45 trillion, then climbed to $2.50 trillion at the end of the day on Wednesday, a four-week high. News Background The London Crypto Club expects the US and Israeli military operation against Iran could be a catalyst for Bitcoin's growth. In the event of a protracted war, investors will start buying the first cryptocurrency as a ‘hedge against the collapse of existing economic and political structures.’ Bitcoin is forming a price bottom and will begin to grow slowly this year, according to VanEck. However, 10x Research warns that there are no signs of an exit from the global bearish trend yet, despite inflows into ETFs and the disappearance of the asset's discount on Coinbase. (RMS) News A.I News (Australia) Canva to draw line through AI unit Tech company Canva has announced a major restructure of its artificial-intelligence video unit, Leonardo AI, with a large number of staff there expected to loose their jobs. The restructure comes only 18 months after Canva purchased Leonardo in a deal thought to be worth $370 million, and is in contrast to Canva's 'upbeat' announcement last week of its purchase of two new AI ventures, marketing algorithm start-up MangoAI and animation software business Cavalry. (RMS) News Most workers unaware of AI surveillance by employers A report from the UTS Human Technology Institute has found that 91 per cent of employers surveyed state that they use software to monitor the location of remote workers. However, only nine per cent of workers believe such technology is deployed in their own roles, and Professor Edward Santow from UTS says "that gap is alarming". Meanwhile, researchers claim that tools used explicitly for surveillance are not the only risk to employee privacy, with wellness and mental health services and products potentially another privacy risk. News News Media (Australia) News Corp leader's call to arms: 'it's make or break' News Corp Australasia's executive chairman Michael Miller is optimistic about the future of public interest journalism. However, he contends that factors such as AI and the regulation of large technology companies means that 2026 is set to be a "make or break" year for Australia's media sector. Miller has called for the federal government to prioritise investment in the "infrastructure of public discourse", arguing that a commitment to Australian journalism is a commitment to a "stronger Australia". He adds that while media companies should strike deals with AI companies, Australia's copyright laws should not be watered down. He has also urged the government to legislate the much-delayed news bargaining incentive, noting that many local media groups are struggling at present. (RMS) News The Lead Up Feb 27 Branding stoush: Why Sky's new name is already under fire Sky News Australia revealed on Friday that it will be rebranded as News24. Sources at the ABC have indicated that the announcement "raised eyebrows" among senior executives of the public broadcaster, given that its 24-hour news channel was originally called ABC News 24 and it owns the trademark rights to this branding. Intellectual property lawyer Jane Rawlings says it would be difficult for Sky News Australia to trademark its new name because it uses generic terms and is similar to the ABC's trademark. A South Africa-based news website also uses the News24 branding, and its logo also has the same colours as Sky News Australia's proposed new logo. (RMS) News Search/News Media Google, Meta take aim at Australian plan for tech giants to pay for journalism The US National Foreign Trade Council has labelled the federal government's News Bargaining Incentive a tax, and something that possibly breaches Australia's free trade agreement with the US. The News Bargaining Incentive aims to force big tech companies like Google and Meta to financially support Australian media by what the government refers to as a "charge and offset scheme", with the Council's complaints about the proposal contained in a submission was made to Treasury in December. News of the submission comes as the federal government tries to secure exemptions from US President Donald Trump's tariffs on imports, which are set to rise for Australia from 10 to 15 per cent. (RMS) News Sports Business V'landys forecasts $1b revenue soon for NRL The National Rugby League has reported that it had total revenue of $845.6 million for the year ending 30 September, an increase of $100.7 million over the previous year. The NRL's net profit rose from $62.3 million to $64.9 million, while net assets were up 20 per cent to $387.3 million. The release of its latest results comes as NRL CEO Andrew Abdo and Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys prepare for talks with television networks and streaming services about a new broadcast deal, while V'landys says he expects the NRL to surpass $1 billion in revenue in the next few years. (RMS) News Biz/Markets Reporting season delivers strongest profit results since 2021, lifting sharemarket The Australian sharemarket has enjoyed its best reporting season since 2021, which has helped to lift what is still viewed as an expensive bourse. With 80 per cent of scheduled companies by market capitalisation having reported as of last week, aggregate earnings per share for the 2026 financial year is forecast to rise around 12 per cent after low single-digit falls in the past three years. Companies that have performed well on the release of their results have included BHP and JB Hi-Fi, while those that have been punished include Wesfarmers and Reliance Worldwide. Ellison says its latest result was the "the strongest in the company's history", while it reaffirmed its full-year volume and cost guidance. (RMS) News Simon Trott awarded Rio Tinto bonus as execs lose out to Magnificent Seven on TSR award The base pay of Rio Tinto CEO Simon Trott will rise from from Stg1.34m ($2.55m) to Stg1.41m from 1 March after the mining company's board awarded him a five per cent pay rise. (RMS) News Rio Tinto boss lobbied Chalmers to save $11b fuel tax rebate The federal government is under pressure to scrap the $11 billion fuel tax rebate scheme that is used by mining companies such as Rio Tinto and BHP. Unions and environment groups argue that removing the rebate scheme would force the resources sector to decarbonise at a faster rate, along with saving taxpayer's money. However, a letter released under freedom of information rules has revealed that Rio's then-chief executive of Australia, Kellie Parker, lobbied Treasurer Jim Chalmers to maintain the rebate scheme in the May budget, with Parker claiming Rio would not be in a position to deploy an electric haul truck fleet until the early 2030s. (RMS) News Energy Landmark deal commits South Australian gas to home market Oil and gas producer Santos has done a deal with the South Australian government that will see all the gas it currently exports from that state instead retained in SA in what Premier Peter Malinauskas has labelled a "state strategic reserve".
