Growing vegetables in buckets or large containers with a free-draining soilless mix gives you productive crops on a paved patio, balcony, or allotment hardstanding — no ground preparation needed. These twelve all perform well in a peat-free compost and perlite mix. 🌱 Lettuce: a 50/50 mix of peat-free multipurpose compost and perlite keeps the root zone moist without waterlogging. Pick outer leaves from May to October. Spinach: coir-based compost retains moisture well through dry spells. Bolt-resistant varieties such as 'Medania' suit British summer conditions. Radishes: vermiculite mixed into the compost prevents compaction and allows rapid root swelling. Ready in as little as four weeks from sowing. Carrots: a deep bucket (at least 30 cm) with a sandy free-draining mix prevents forking. Round or short-rooted varieties such as 'Parmex' or 'Chantenay' suit container depth constraints. Beetroot: compost-based mix with added organic matter. 'Boltardy' is the standard British choice — reliable and slow to bolt. Kale: a heavy feeder needing a rich compost mix with added slow-release fertiliser. Produces through autumn and winter — one of the most productive container crops for British conditions. Chard: perlite added to the compost improves drainage. Highly ornamental and productive from June through to hard frost. Rocket: a lightweight multipurpose compost suits the fast growth cycle. Sow every three weeks from March to September for continuous picking. Turnips: a loamy compost blend with good structure supports even root development. 'Milan White' and 'Tokyo Cross' both suit container growing. Cabbage: aged compost or a slow-release fertiliser addition sustains the long growing period. Compact varieties such as 'Pixie' suit containers best. Broccoli: coir and compost combined provides consistent moisture through the heading period. Calabrese types suit summer harvests; sprouting broccoli overwinters and produces in late winter and spring. Cauliflower: an aerated free-draining mix reduces the risk of clubroot and other soil-borne disease common in reused container compost. Refresh compost between crops. 🌿 #GrowYourOwn #ContainerGardening #UrbanGardening

#Plasmodiophora brassicae, the obligate parasite responsible for clubroot in Brassica crops and other crucifers, poses a major challenge to sustainable disease management due to its biotrophic lifestyle and adaptability. Emilee R. M. Storfie et al. present the first comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge on P. brassicae effectors, aiming to classify them according to their roles in host manipulation. Remember 10 years ago when clubroot showed up to Manitoba.. and we had to clean our equipment at the approach and dispose of the mud so we didn’t contaminate the next field…. Well LOL
