If you're too important to be in the trenches with your team, you're too important to lead them.
One of my favorite leadership moments was in a call center, when a rep asked me (their 2nd line manager) to hop on a call they were struggling to close.
I joined. Reframed the message. De-risked the decision. Painted a path to ROI. By the time I sent it to voice verification, the entire office erupted in applause.
But that moment wasn’t about me. It was about showing my team that I can and will do what I ask of them.
Because leadership isn’t pointing from the shore. It’s rowing with the team.
🧭 I regularly join customer calls—not to take over, but to observe, coach, and support.
🧲 I prospect too—because building pipeline is everyone’s job.
🎯 I stay close to their rhythms—not because I don’t trust them, but because trust is built by being present.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
✅ People believe in leaders who are willing to do the work.
✅ Coaching is better when you’ve walked with them.
✅ The goal isn’t to be the hero—it’s to make heroes out of your people.
Just like parenting, great leadership is about:
🌱 Empowering without controlling
🛠️ Removing roadblocks without taking the wheel
🧠 Offering wisdom without needing credit
🫱 Showing up—especially when they lose
Your job isn’t to be the hero. It’s to be the hero-maker.
Leadership is the greatest privilege I’ve ever been given.
And the time you spend with your team?
It’s not just valuable.
It’s everything.
