“Timmy the Monkey” actually comes from geek culture tied to GameStop, specifically through ThinkGeek, a very popular store that was acquired by GameStop years ago.
Timmy was the official mascot of ThinkGeek — a stuffed monkey that appeared for many years in campaigns, products, and community memes. The story began around 1999, when he was introduced as the company’s “codemonkey” mascot.
Over time, the GME community and longtime holders started connecting Timmy with the entire GameStop “ape” culture:
- apes together strong,
- diamond hands holders,
- Reddit meme culture,
- and the nostalgic ThinkGeek GameStop era.
There are even old Reddit posts where people directly recognize Timmy as “the ThinkGeek Monkey” inside the GME community.
What’s interesting is that many newer people think Timmy was created during the 2021 GME saga, but the monkey actually existed long before that, during the classic ThinkGeek days, and was later embraced by GameStop meme culture.
That’s why some OG holders see Timmy as:
- an ancient mascot,
- a hidden GME symbol,
- and a relic from the pre-squeeze geek culture era.
And of course… with the whole “apes” narrative surrounding GME, the monkey ended up fitting perfectly.
