My journey into the world of crypto was quite atypical. My roots are steeped in academic research. My first introduction to coding was in a physics class, crafting analyses in unrolled for loops in MATLAB: I didn’t know what for loops were ten years ago! I remember finding myself surviving off the generosity of my classmates, as they helped me figure out the absolute fundamentals of coding. This skill evolved during my PhD, where I embraced both Python and FORTRAN (shudders), diving deeper into the codingverse. My foray into DeFi and was not through formal education but through the fun-filled world of side projects and self-driven learning: I would pass my spare time during the COVID lockdowns trying to understand AMM algorithms, interest rate models, economic designs of protocols, MEV, just for the fun of it, compiling all my analyses in simple Jupyter notebooks filled with on-chain analytics. While I’m very very deep into the world of Vyper, I still find myself hesitant when it comes to writing a line of Solidity; preferring instead the less trodden path of the snek (which captured my attention very quickly, especially since I come from a pythonic background). I’ve come to understand that opportunities frequently surface not solely from showcasing skill but also from serendipitous encounters. These moments unexpectedly offer a stage, not too different from an impromptu elevator pitch, where you suddenly find yourself rambling to just the right person at just the right moment of their very busy day. It is in these spontaneous exchanges that potential is often recognised and opportunities are seized. More importantly, it is the drive to create value and deliver results that resonates most when eager ears are listening. Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to encounter individuals who recognised within me a potential and eagerness to contribute. Their belief in me opened doors to write code for multi-billion-dollar protocols, Earth Observation missions, and (albeit low liquid) energy markets. This drive, coupled with a commitment to providing value, is fundamental. Let your work speak for itself. If an organisation asks you waste time on unnecessary tests that do not simulate a normal workday with them while your contributions in open source loudly advocate your capabilities, walk away. Whether it’s a giant like Google, Apple, or industry giants in our domain, remember there are always better options where your value is recognised and cherished. Always be ready to seek them out and move away from outdated practices. Embrace the journey, prune the unnecessary, and thrive in environments that value true potential and passion.

a few weeks ago i did interviews, coding puzzles, all the silly bullshit, all to get a "junior engineer" offer from smg/consensys for half the pay and double the hours i quoted. they even cited the fact that i don't have degree companies that demand degrees are not worth your time companies that demand leetcode are not worth your time and this is exactly why we're on the frontier, this is especially true in crypto. when you're close to the heat, anything goes. it doesn't matter how it happens, just make it happen. we're building money printing tech in a money printing industry any company that can't recognize this and falls back on such silly filtering systems does so bc either they're so entrenched in a bureaucratic system that the only way they can justify the salary a software pioneer deserves is by requiring every trad label that makes them look good to the bean counter.. or they're a follower. both will give you problems you can start at youtube tutorials and, through open source contributions and a conference here and there, you can become the very best and you can set your price no degrees, no certs, just oss and autistically rambling about the right thing to the right person at a happy hour. that's all it takes
