How to Break the Ice in Cold Calls 📞 1️⃣ Start with a Warm Greeting/Tone 🌞 First impressions matter! Begin your cold call with a friendly and warm greeting. A simple "Hello, [Prospect's Name]! How's your day going?" sets a positive tone and opens the door for a more engaging conversation. ----> Some people will say that you need to match the energy level of the person you're calling. I STRONGLY disagree. You obviously don't need to be so high-energy that you're yelling, but my tone is ALWAYS positive. This is not a time to "fake it until you make it" though... ----> You MUST have the mental strength, toughness, and peacefulness to put yourself in a genuinely good mood. You can hear fake coming from the other line, so your prospect will hear it right away. Get yourself in the right mindset to "smile and dial". IMPORTANT: Your prospect will judge you mainly on your tone (70%) and then on the words you say (30%)! 💎 Here's how I would describe my ideal tone: Soft like a lamb, but assertive/confident like a lion. *Soft doesn't mean I'm quiet, but it does mean I'm relaxed.* 2️⃣ "Play Dumb" Technique This technique involves adopting a humble and curious demeanor, almost as if you're seeking guidance. It can be disarming and encourages a more open conversation. *This technique does NOT work if you fail to nail down the right tonality as we went over above.* ----> Asking for help immediately lowers any walls the prospect may have built up by taking a call from a stranger. After your warm greeting... Example: "<Prospect's Name>, I'm actually not sure if you're the right person I need to speak with, but do you mind helping me find the right person to connect with?" ----> Most of the time, their guard is almost completely down at this point. People want to help others. It's in our nature. Once they say something like, "Sure, how can I help?" or "Sure, what are you calling about?", then you can go right into talking about the reason why you're calling the problem your product/service is going to be solving for them. ----> Remember, the "playing dumb" approach works best when it's genuine and respectful. It's not about pretending but rather acknowledging that there's always more to learn and valuing the prospect's knowledge. 3️⃣ Pose Thought-Provoking Questions Engage your prospect's mind with thought-provoking questions. This not only breaks the ice but also demonstrates your genuine interest in understanding their needs. Example: "I was curious, in your experience, what's the biggest challenge you've faced in [industry/role] recently?" ----> This is why it's so important to go into every call prepared. Have a genuine belief that the product/service you're calling about will have a positive impact on your prospect's life/business. If you truly do care, you'll come ready with the knowledge of the various pain-points/challenges/obstacles/issues your prospect may be currently dealing with. 💎 Remember the 6 P's: Piss-Poor Preparation leads to Piss-Poor Performance 4️⃣ Share a Relevant Success Story Boost your credibility by sharing a brief success story related to your product or service. This not only showcases your expertise but also provides a real-world example that your prospect can relate to. Example: "I recently worked with a client who faced a similar challenge to yours, and we were able to achieve [result]." ----> This is a common sales tool to use in all forms of selling, but it's especially helpful when you're speaking with someone who still may have some reluctance towards your call or walls still up that you need to break down if #'s 1-3 haven't been able to do already. ----> Hearing not only that you've called others but that you've already helped others, will get you that much closer to breaking the ice completely with a more difficult prospect. 5️⃣ Acknowledge the Cold Call If all else fails, address the elephant in the room! Acknowledge that you're "calling out of the blue, but..." and express your respect for their time. Example: "I know unexpected calls can be a surprise. I promise to keep this brief. Can you help me (YES, when in doubt, play dumb) find the right person to discuss [specific pain point] and explore potential x, y, z solutions I can offer?" ----> Look, the worst thing that can happen on a cold call is that they hang up on you. Not a big deal! So, if you feel that you're not getting anywhere when it comes to quickly breaking the ice with a prospect, simply call it like it is, play dumb, and reiterate your value. ✨ Bonus Tip: Practice Active Listening ----> Listen more than you talk. This builds rapport and allows you to tailor your pitch to the prospect's needs.
