How do we create tags?
We often suggest avoid creating random tags, so we thought it would be useful to share how the core team actually creates them.
To begin with, we are Theme Pic India—a theme must carry a certain Indian-ness. That’s our first lookout. We have made exceptions like colorcombo, green, orange etc.
Next, we evaluate its relevance: is it something meaningful, valuable, or deserving of attention?
We also consider whether it applies across the country e.g. We can’t create a tag just for modaks, instead, we opt for a broader, more inclusive theme like foodies and suggest to add an extra tag.
Another key factor is cultural spread. Some festivals are region-specific, while others—like Diwali—are celebrated across the country (and even globally, in different forms).
The 'What if' element e.g. Diwali again, what if participants are motivated to explore the shopping vibes? What if we inspire to look a bit differently at otherwise dull roads/pathways/highways.
These are just the starting points of ideation.
Then comes deeper evaluation.
Understanding participants: Most of you shoot on mobile phones, so themes must be executable on both mobile and high-end cameras.
Does it sound right? Very important. That’s why we avoid tags like dogs/cats/ randomclicks. “India dogs” doesn’t quite sit well. Instead, we use broader categories like pets, animals, insects, or wildlife.
Is it too technical? Themes shouldn’t be device-heavy (e.g., depth of field in grayscale).
Is it easy to remember? We try our best, though often many slip-ups still happen 😔
Will it be misinterpreted? This is critical. The tag has to be sharp and immediately understood. In the past a few theme were misinterpreted in a very ugly manner by some.
After all this, the core team—acting as devil’s advocates—tears the idea apart from every possible angle.
Only then is a tag finalized. But it does not end here!
Next comes the declaration stage, where the content is again vetted. We also consider its implications for our sibling community, Theme Pic World, and how it translates to our Instagram handle (

This info is not to boast—we’ve had our share of misses too.
Think of this as an FYI and a reminder: there is India in the tag.
So please be mindful before creating any tag.
It is not a 'fill in the blanks' exercise!!!
And finally—as always—if you have an idea, we’re all ears. Feel free to DM us or reach out to any core team member's.
