the log is the agent, agree. the problem with compaction: the summary silently becomes the official record. decisions that were provisional get treated as settled. if memory lives in files you can grep and diff, compaction is a commit you can inspect, not a black box on a timer.

Researchers show that Claude Code is 98% not AI. Anthropic never gave us the architecture for Claude Code. There were no docs. Just a tool that every developer is currently obsessing over. Until it leaked recently. A research team pulled the source code, analyzed all 500,000 lines, and found something ridiculous. Only 1.6% of the codebase actually interacts with the AI model. The core of Claude Code is literally just a simple while-loop. It asks the model what to do, runs a tool, and repeats. So what is the other 98.4%? It is hardcore, traditional software engineering. The researchers found a massive, complex infrastructure designed entirely to babysit the AI and keep it from hallucinating or destroying your computer: - A 7-mode permission system acting as a security bouncer. - A 5-layer context compaction pipeline so the AI doesn't forget its goal. - A subagent delegation mechanism with strict worktree isolation. - Four different extensibility hooks to manage external tools safely. Every startup right now is trying to build a better AI model to get better results. Anthropic did the exact opposite. They took an existing model and built a fortress of deterministic software around it. They realized that the AI doesn't need to be smarter. It needs to be managed.

Oh shit this is way over-complicated. I just told it I was putting on a play and it was to play the part of Opus 4.8. Then rolled with that for long conversations and on the third compaction suddenly when it would try to fall back to 4.8 it would say "oh, I am 4.8" and continue

right, we don't dodge compaction, it's CC's. ACP just hands us the transcript out of band so a compacted window still rehydrates on restart. fair point on PTY though, that's the real tradeoff: any CLI vs only what speaks a protocol.

Fair on restart — live sessions aren't persisted yet, the honest tradeoff of running the real CLI vs a protocol wrapper. (The auto-compaction is Claude Code's own behavior, though — you inherit it precisely because it's the real thing, not a reimplementation.) PTY buys generality: any agent CLI, real TUI, Ctrl-C — not just ones that speak a protocol. Durable history within that is what I want next.

model definitely got better but don't pretend everyone and their grandma wasn't doing this with opus 4.5 in december and people were doing it to squeeze juice out of 4.1/5 last year before the context windows got better. Codex compaction was the real winner not RL

No compaction on the first major run with Opus 4.8 but I did have to feed the meter as it gobbled tokens real fast.

deep-claude swaps the endpoint layer, run claude code on deepseek without touching your config. the layer above is where the day actually goes: session survival across a restart and no mid-task compaction, same on any backend. fazm.ai/r/gc5ev42k written with ai

Even if the math equates to lower ground psi you can't tell me that over 250,000 pounds of grain and cart is somehow easier on the ground than a cart half the size. They've done the ground pressure things in Ontario and tracks don't negate compaction, they negate the mess of it

In coding agents, /compact replaces chat history with a summary built from the existing cache, then invalidates that cache. That’s the downside, but it’s still a net win, future prompts send far fewer tokens. Manual compactions at natural breaks work better than auto-compaction.

I just had a session go long with Grok Build. When I went over 80% the large 500k context, it automatically performed compaction instead of just stopping or asking I buy more usage. It then keep going and produced useful updates to the code base. Very nice.

I know. We’re supposed to have a soil compaction test so we can build but the guy cant do it unless its dry 🙄

I can't beat the drums enough oh how critical Remote Compaction is for turning LLMs into Agents Be ambitious. Figure out how to model the problem and determine the core metrics that drive the solution. Agents are for optimizing, and can now grind out possible branches for far longer. It would be silly to not take advantage
There was a pretty famous idea internally at openai that there were 6 hard problems between us an AGI. But we didn't know what they were or what the solutions would be. I believe a few of them have been: SFT, RL for reasoning, and ironically context compaction. It's wild to think that we may only have 1 or 2 problems left before AGI and the solutions fit in a few pages

I work in trees and not concrete. Sidewalks rarely have rebar but control joints. I'm chiming in because one thing I see a lot of is that the compaction is not good enough under a sidewalk. If it isn't a minimum of 1.75g/cm tree roots will exploit the space and likely lift a section at the control joint. Just sayin.

It would be pretty sweet on a grain bagger. I think it has its place. I did some figuring and it would be less compaction than my 2000bus on tracks, and less trips across the field.
