NIH Ends Funding for Animal-Only Studies. Having just served as the Chair of the first NIH #Complement_ARIE study section to promote development of human-based #NAMs (New Approaches Methodologies), I am just as stunned as everyone that NIH announced it will no longer fund research proposals that rely solely on animal models. While this is as a major shift in federal research priorities toward human-relevant, tech-enabled approaches, this initiative started before Trump administration (i.e. likely to outlast it).
Implications for lab-based researchers at @michiganstateu, @MSUMD, @MSU_Medicine, @MSU_Osteopathic, @MSU College of Natural Science, @HFH_MSU_HS, @HenryFordHealth, & @VAInstitute
> Proposals must now include at least one human-based #NAM models, such as computational modeling, real world evidence, organoids, or organs-on-a-chip. Not yet sure if in vitro human cell assays count.
> Greater emphasis on in vitro, in silico, and AI-based methods.
> If we want to lead, we must increase collaboration with @MSU_EGR, & clinical & translational researchers at @HenryFordHealth & @CorewellHealth.
