JAMB is trending because according to bloggers, JAMB is no longer required for admission into tertiary institutions. — this is false and misinterpreted.
JAMB remains compulsory. It is O’ level SSCE requirements and JAMB cut-off system that have changed.
Now for Universities — Mathematics is no longer compulsory for non-science students. But 5 credits are required.
For Polytechnics:
HND — 5 credits required, Maths only compulsory for science students.
ND — now 4 credits required, Maths only compulsory for science students.
For College of Education:
B.Ed — 5 credits required, Maths only compulsory for science students.
NCE — now 4 credits required, Maths only compulsory for science students.
Innovative Enterprise Academies (IEA) — now 4 credits required, Maths only compulsory for science students.
The National Innovation Diploma (NID) has been abolished. The National Industrial Diploma (NID) will be replaced with ND and like-standards.
National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) is now re-accrediting IEA’s to meet ND standards, or lose licensing.
This is to open up admission for up to 300,000 students who are denied annually.
The misunderstanding with the misleading news is a communication error in the Ministry’s Release. They failed to mention JAMB along with other requirements like WAEC compliance. Hence the misinterpretation.
However, JAMB has a major change. Students will now be admitted based on national ranking.
Meaning, if you score 390/400 and 500,000 candidates wrote the exams, jamb will not only send your 390 to your school of choice. They will also send your ranking among the 500,000 people who wrote the exam.
i.e. you could score 390/400 and rank 12th overall in the country, out of 2,000,000 candidates. In short, JAMB now has a 1st, 2nd, 3rd … position like primary school.
They’d send this National Rank and Score to your school of choice. This is to have a uniform cutoff requirement.
So, UNILAG can say they’d only be considering people who ranked from 3,000/2,000,000 to 1st. LASU could say they’d be considering people who only ranked from 1st to 20th. It and to replace the archaic 180-cut off, 200-cut off.
That way, students know whether they stand a chance before proceeding with Post UTME etc.
The big question now is; If someone gets admitted into ND with 4 subjects, does it mean they won’t be able to do their HND?
