This new paper in npj Digital Medicine introduces READY, a framework for evaluating medical LLM benchmarks across five principles:
Reliable | Ethical | Annotated | Diverse | Yield-validated
The framework is built from a scoping review of 55 medical benchmark studies, then had five domain experts apply READY to benchmark papers and found consistent inter-rater agreement.
That matters because too many healthcare AI evaluations still over-index on narrow benchmark wins while underweighting:
• whether the data is clinically representative,
• whether annotations are trustworthy,
• whether ethical risks are considered,
• and whether results hold up outside the benchmark itself.
