China's Military Drill
China’s PLA conducted large-scale drills around Taiwan on December 29–30, 2025, codenamed Justice Mission–2025, to assert sovereignty, deter Taiwanese independence, and warn foreign actors. The exercises focused on the Taiwan Strait, a vital strategic corridor.
On Day 1, the PLA flew 130 sorties, with 90 aircraft crossing the Strait’s centreline, challenging Taiwan’s air defence norms. Day 2 shifted to maritime pressure, with 10 long-range rockets landing inside Taiwan’s contiguous zone—the closest missile activity yet—signalling the ability to threaten ports and coastal areas without full escalation.
The drills simulated port blockades, joint land–sea–air deterrence, and strategic encirclement rather than invasion. They followed earlier exercises linked to U.S.–Taiwan engagements and coincided with a proposed $11 billion U.S. arms package.
Taiwan condemned the actions, raised combat readiness, and pushed air-defence reforms. International responses were cautious, though concerns from the EU and Japan highlighted rising regional tensions.
Overall, the drills reflect China’s evolving strategy of airspace control, maritime isolation, and coercive pressure to tighten control around Taiwan while avoiding open war.
