I just turned 6 when I started first grade. Kindergarten for me from 4-5 yo was at a big table in the family room where my Mother taught me how to print and write cursive, basic Math, Reading, Arts & Crafts, etc. Walked up the street to the first kids house. She was 7 and in second grade. She was in charge. Up a few more houses to another first graders house. Then on to another second grader... by the time we got to school there were 5 of us, lol. All between 5-7 yo. Did that routine until Middle School (6th grade). Then walked a different direction. Same routine, different kids.

It's in quality too. "Can you write in cursive" is just a first step of fine control. "Can you write tight, calligraphic quality cursive" is something else entirely. And. These are the core actual skills of a surgeon... Metrics like diagnosis and stress reactions are still key - but, if you gutted your starting pool somehow ... "But, no one writes letters at all?" Sure. But ... fine motor control training ...

Students are no longer taught Ethics in Business Schools, seems quite evident to me when you see the Widespread Sense of Entitlement of Grifting off the Taxpayers @ Every Level. They Can't Read Cursive Writing & are Unable to read the Founding Documents for themselves

If students come out of schools illiterate in math and economics, they'll never know how much the politicians are stealing.

Also, cursive is dying faster than Latin ever did. A University of Stavanger study found 40% of Gen Z have already lost the ability to write functionally, the first break in 5,500 years of unbroken handwriting history.
