Special Cases 1. Colby Garland (GTech). Midrange merchants, which is what his profile suggests on the surface, scare the absolute piss out of me when translating up. However, there is a fair bit of context needed for his situation. First, that San Jose St team was absolutely MISERABLE, down multiple starters nearly the entire year, and playing in the best midmajor conference in the country by margin. Second, Garland has one of the best floaters in all of college basketball. Synergy had him 89th percentile in frequency at a 96th percentile efficiency. That's one out for him. Third, he was one of four guys in the entire portal with an Assist Rate above 30% (31.9%) and a TO% below 15% (12.5%). That is E-LITE, I don't care what conference you played in. But the main reason I like this has to do with landing spot. Scott Cross is one of the most analytically savvy offensive minds in the sport. Troy was inside the Top 120 of 3PRate every year and inside the Top 60 each of the last 2 years. Additionally, the Trojans finished 11th, 8th, and 18th nationally in Average 2PA Distance. One of the biggest shot diet improvements for any on-ball transfer in the portal. 2. Elijah Crawford (Nova): Missed 12 games for a UIC team who was one of the big midmajor surprises last year. UIC also played a polar opposite defensive scheme to Willard the past couple years which gave Crawford more transition opportunities. In a small sample, we saw uber usage, a willingness to settle for non-rim 2's (even while being an INSANE 73% at the cup), and he shot under 28% from 3 on decent volume. I mean, the only other guy who can take on-ball reps from him is..Buddy Simmons? Crawford should have heavy on-ball usage, especially in PnR, and will likely be the guy who determines whether Nova meets/exceeds expectations or falls short. Need to chew on this one more, but at this point, I tend to more skeptical than optimistic. 3. Del Jones (SHall): Probably the most amount of red in this table. Not only was the 3rd worst rim efficiency on the list, but was also below average in rim frequency, shot 30% from 3, and the Pirates have way more backcourt help around him than Bud Clark had last year. But there are two massive concerns with him specifically. The first is the aforementioned inefficiency at the rim for a team that forces their way to the cup at a massive rate b/c they can't shoot for shit. The second, and probably the most important when it comes to playing time for Shaheen, has to do with the fact that he is, generously speaking, a TERRIBLE defender. -1.9 DRAPM, -2.3 DBPM, -0.91 DBPR...there isn't a single defensive metric I can find that even hints he may be a below average defender. It is literal bottom of the barrel type stuff. Try not playing defense on that team and let me know how much you're on the floor.
