Technical Inconsistencies in
@sharaky_abbas ‘s Spillway Claims
In his recent Facebook post, Abbas Sharky suggested that water is currently being discharged through the ungated spillway at the Renaissance Dam located at 640 meters above sea level (asl). However, he also claims that the current reservoir elevation is 638.25 meters asl.
For the sake of argument, let’s assume this was for spillway testing. But from a technical perspective, this scenario is physically implausible. In dam hydraulics, water only passes over an ungated spillway crest if the hydraulic head (the height difference between the water level and the spillway) exceeds the crest elevation.
With the reservoir at 638.25 meters, the water level is 1.75 meters below the spillway crest at 640 meters, meaning there is insufficient head to trigger flow over the spillway. This basic principle of hydraulic engineering and fluid dynamics governs all dam operations, making Sharky’s claim technically incorrect.
This clear misinterpretation of reservoir management fundamentals raises doubts about the accuracy of the information being presented.
