Got off at Newton for Hyde station... wonderful archaeology! Datestones of 1893 and MSLR (Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway), & a sleeper with carpenter's marks. Not sure of meaning (tallies? dates?) but definitely done with a race knife, & full of handmade nails.

Date stones were popular in the 16th century in Europe possibility that the datestones could commemorate the builder or owner.always a mystery sometimes misleading about the date of the building.

So-called datestones are problematic as they are not necessarily related to construction phases. Difficult to provenance reused masonry without a detailed survey and analysis.

The Church of St Catherine, #Staverton, #Gloucestershire. Grade II.
“C13, C14, possibly C15, 1712, 1735 (both datestones), vestry 1865, restored 1870-1884 by H.M. Townsend, 1897 by Prothero.”
ALT The Church of St Catherine, Staverton, Gloucestershire. Photo taken from the southeast of the church, showing the Chancel to the right and a short, square plan tower to the left, with gravestones in front of both. The church walls are made of limestone rubble stonework, and the roofs are also made of limestone slates; the top part of the tower is crenelated. The gravestones are set in a grassed churchyard with an access path running from the centre bottom of the photo past the left side of the tower. Overhanging trees frame the photo on the left and right sides.
