Our 14th iteration of the hands-on #training in clinical and laboratory genetics at #FRIGE comes to a successful conclusion. Trainees ranging from just 16 years old to graduate students spent one month learning the craft of clinical genetics which included - experiment design, karyotyping and PCRs from their own sample, Sanger sequencing, data interpretation, report generation, and genetic counseling. Happy and deeply humbled to share that I have successfully passed the #FRCPath Part 1 #Genetics The #FRCPath is the specialist qualification pathway of the @RCPath UK, and completing part 1 reflects one of the most rigorous training and assessment in the science and practice of genetics. This is an important professional milestone for me and to the best of my knowledge, places me among a relatively small number of individuals from #India to have completed this qualification in genetics. 6 long years journey finally culminating into a single unifying publication that describes genetic architecture of #maleinfertility in #India This work is the outcome of national and international collaboration with IKDRC, @icmrnirrch, @UniofNewcastle , and @EdinburghUni, which was overall led by #FRIGE and #DecipherDNA Wonderful to see our work capturing media and public's attention with its potential to change paradigm in diagnosis, treatment, and management of male infertility. Major source of inspiration- my father @jshethad1 who himself worked on endocrine dysfunction in male infertility 3 decades ago, and Prof Joris Veltman who taught me large scale genomic studies. My dearest colleagues - Pritti Kumari who was the lead clinical collaborator, @DeepakNModi who has an encyclopedic knowledge of Y chromosome, and Shrutikaa Kale who co developed smMIP based assay at #DecipherDNA. Bottleneck in #genomics is not data generation anymore, but data analysis & interpretation. At #FRIGE, we use GPU based data analysis acceleration which is coded and powered by #DecipherDNA (decipherdna.co.in/). This has solved the data analysis bottleneck but robust & time sensitive data interpretation still remains a challenge. @Google has just posted a very interesting blog describing a conversational architecture for variant interpretation for a given clinical context.
