In the era of the “post” and digital fragmentation, we are forgetting how to inhabit a book. True intellectual warfare isn’t won by consuming more snippets; it’s won by those who can withstand the “resistance” of a complex text. As the saying goes: “If you want to win the war, go to a bookstore and read.”

Specifically, this is his student ID photograph for Tuskegee Institute, taken in 1933 when the future novelist was 20 years old. The Journey to Tuskegee In the summer of 1933, unable to afford the $36 fare from Oklahoma to Alabama, Ellison travelled as a stowaway, jumping between freight trains. During this dangerous clandestine journey, the young man was involved in a violent physical altercation in the carriages that left him with injuries to his face. This incident explains the prominent bandage on his forehead that was immortalised when his official admission photograph was taken on campus.
