🪸 Bamboo coral forests, sponge gardens & a myriad of unknown creatures found 3,000m deep, in a realm of perpetual darkness & immense pressure.
How can we even consider deep-sea mining when we're only just discovering what's there?! #DefendTheDeepoceanographicmagazine.com/ne…
The Mediterranean deep sea is home to incredible life we still know little about.
We're calling on Mediterranean countries to extend the deep-sea trawl ban to below 800m to protect these critical ecosystems, biodiversity, and the future of Mediterranean fisheries.

“The ocean isn't just a resource; it is our life, our culture, and our future.”
Pacific Network on Globalisation (PANG) representative Laisa Neinoka outlines why the inclusion of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) is absolutely non-negotiable at the current International Seabed Authority (ISA) deep sea mining discussions in Suva.
Neinoka says CSOs represent the heartbeat and voices of our grassroots Pacific communities, the very people who will bear the brunt of any environmental fallout.
She added that decisions about the Pacific's pristine oceans cannot be made behind closed doors without the people who guard them.

Final from Mt. Olympus.
Proud of the fight, proud of the season, but the standard in Washington remains the same… Championships.
We’ll learn from it. We’ll reload. And we’ll be back. 🔱

The deep sea is home to a colorful array of marine life. 🌈
But now as the Trump admin. works to fast-track ocean mining, areas of this important ecosystem could be destroyed before we have a chance to understand it.

The deep sea is one of the most fragile parts of the planet, yet its future is at risk. 🪼
With the threat of #DeepSeaMining 🪸⛏️ & impacts unknown, States must implement a moratorium on this industry that could affect the health of our planet. 🌍
#DeepDay#DefendTheDeep 🦑
💙 Today is #DeepDay, a day to celebrate the deep ocean and stand up for its protection. As govts consider the future of the deep ocean, now is the time to support the growing calls for a global moratorium on deep sea mining.
Together, we can #DefendTheDeep.

🎉 It's nearly #DeepDay! Join the growing wave of momentum - from Indigenous leaders, youth movements, policymakers, businesses and ocean lovers all around the world - all saying "no" to deep-sea destruction.

At @UN_FAO_GFCM, the science is clear: Mediterranean deep-sea ecosystems are under threat & protecting them is vital. Extending the bottom trawling ban to below 800m has high ecological benefits & limited socio-economic impact. Time to turn science into protection. #DefendTheDeep
Deep‑sea ecosystems support unique biodiversity, help regulate the climate, and sustain fish populations and coastal livelihoods.
Protecting the #Mediterranean deep sea is essential. For marine life, for people, and for the future of our ocean.

💰 #DeepSeaMining is a high-risk gamble.
⚠️ Never proven at commercial scale
📉 Price drops could erase profits
🏦 ~80 financial institutions have raised concerns
As the @ISBAHQ Council starts today, the message is clear.

We know more about outer space than our own oceans.
99% of the deep ocean remains unexplored.
Decisions are being made today that could alter underwater ecosystems forever. Before we tap into the deep sea, let’s remember—we’ve barely scratched the surface.
Hence the need for a moratorium on deep sea mining until we understand the irreversible consequences.
Join the call!

#AGRIFISH ends without tackling the root cause of the fishing sector’s woes: fish stocks still under pressure after decades of overfishing. Despite a legal duty to end overfishing by 2025, France, Italy & Spain won't reduce trawling days.

ALT “We regret that Member States have not strengthened the compensation measures intended to protect deep-sea ecosystems,” said Helena Álvarez, senior marine scientist at Oceana. “Maintaining the closure only below 800 metres, instead of extending it upward to 600 metres —depths where, in practice, little to no fishing occurs— will allow vessels to benefit unjustifiably from additional fishing days, increasing overall fishing effort and running counter to scientific advice”.
