Today, I had the honour of serving as Guest of Honour at St Giles Medical Rehabilitation Centre as we commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).
IDPD reminds us that disability inclusion is not charity—it is a right, a policy imperative, and a development priority, as affirmed by the global community through the United Nations and anchored locally in Zimbabwe’s National Disability Policy.
I was deeply inspired by the work of St Giles and its Special School—institutions that go beyond care to restore dignity, unlock potential, and enable full participation in society. Their work is a powerful reminder that inclusion is built through systems, partnerships and sustained commitment, not once-off gestures.
As leaders—across government, business and civil society—we each carry a responsibility to ensure that ability is seen before limitation, and that inclusion is embedded in how we design policy, deliver services, and invest in communities.
A society is not measured by how it treats the powerful, but by how it empowers the vulnerable.
Let us continue to build a Zimbabwe where every person counts and every ability is valued.
