What a great way to start the day. I had the pleasure of visiting Marsh Avenue Expeditionary Learning School (MAELS) in Staten Island to engage students in a discussion on "Global Citizenship and the Role of the United Nations." The session formed part of the students' curriculum on global issues, diplomacy, international cooperation, and the work of the @UN. Students in grades 7, 8, and 9 came exceptionally well prepared, demonstrating a strong understanding of contemporary global challenges and a genuine interest in international affairs. We discussed the structure and functions of the @UN, the role of its principal organs, and the work of the Permanent Mission of #Eritrea to the UN. I was particularly impressed by the students' thoughtful questions about #Eritrea, its history and culture, its development priorities, and its role within the @UN. The exchange provided an opportunity to discuss #Eritrea's commitment to #multilateralism, the principles of the @UN Charter, and the sovereign equality of states. In keeping with the significance of the International Day of Dialogue among Civilizations, we also reflected on the importance of #diplomacy, intercultural #understanding, mutual respect, and constructive engagement among peoples and nations. The visit complemented the objectives of the NYC Junior Ambassadors Program, an initiative of the Mayor's Office for International Affairs that promotes global awareness, leadership, and civic engagement among young New Yorkers. My sincere thanks to the students, teachers, and staff of MAELS for their warm welcome, thoughtful engagement, and inspiring curiosity about the world around them. I also extend my appreciation to the Mayor's Office for International Affairs for organizing this valuable exchange and creating opportunities for young people to engage with the work of the @UN and the international community. I was pleased to participate in the event organized by the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations in Vienna on the occasion of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, established by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 78/286 on 10 June 2024, following an initiative by China and with the support of more than 80 countries. The resolution affirms that the achievements of all civilizations constitute the shared heritage of humanity and highlights the importance of mutual respect, dialogue, and understanding among peoples and cultures. I was particularly delighted to see, in the accompanying exhibition, an image of the Yemeni coffee tree displayed as a symbol of Yemen’s cultural identity and rich historical legacy. It served as a meaningful reminder of Yemen’s place as one of the world’s oldest civilizations and its enduring contribution to humanity’s cultural heritage. Lin Jian: Three years ago, President Xi Jinping put forth the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), highlighting the need for civilizations to live together in harmony. Establishing the International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations is an important step to implement the GCI. Today marks the second International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations. As the initiator, China, together with the UN and other international organizations, held a variety of events across the globe. Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi delivered a video address and proposed to facilitate dialogue among civilizations from four aspects: First, champion mutual respect and promote harmonious coexistence of civilizations; Second, champion putting the people first and cement the foundation of exchanges among civilizations; Third, champion both heritage and innovation to drive the progress of civilization; Fourth, champion exchanges and mutual learning and improve mechanisms for dialogue among civilizations. President of Colombia Petro, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Miguel Ángel Moratinos, and heads of UN entities and other international organizations in cities including Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi, and Hague have voiced their support on the events and delivered remarks.
