A firechat with Dries Buytaert, founder of
@drupal , on shaping the future of digital government, covering digital sovereignty, open source, AI infrastructure, and the evolution of public services at Drupal Developer Days 2026 in Athens.
Digital sovereignty is the ability to make informed, autonomous decisions about our data, infrastructure, systems, and technologies. In an increasingly interconnected world, the objective is not isolation, but the capacity to combine advanced cloud and AI capabilities with resilience, security, and effective public service delivery.
#Digital_sovereignty is not autarky.
In my view, there are multiple approaches to achieving it: air-gapped systems, strategic optionality (the ability to switch providers), reliance on trusted partners, and sustained investment in trusted individuals and talent.
One particularly compelling perspective, highlighted by Dries during our discussion, is that the core challenge lies in proprietary software and that open source can be a fundamental part of the solution.
Great to be in a room full of programmers.
Still not sure about the bunny!
