After Tyler Cook’s mother and sister both died from stomach cancer in their 30’s, a doctor suggested that it could be genetic. At the time, researcher Dr David Huntsman had just developed the DNA-based blood test that identifies the genetic cause of hereditary diffuse stomach cancer. With our funding, he studied over 80 families with the disease and discovered several genetic mutations that greatly increased their risk.
Tyler got tested and it was discovered that he carried the mutation. He got his stomach removed in 2010, a drastic step that reduces the chance of dying from the disease from 70% to less than 1%. Today, Tyler is a father and husband who credits Dr Huntsman's research for saving his life.
