Yup! Likewise, the inherited plural of “dwarf” is “dwarrows.”

That berg would’ve become “barf” is suggested by the fact that dwerg became “dwarf.” Of course the oblique form of berg survived as “barrows,” just as the oblique form of dwerg would’ve become “dwarrows."

This is FALSE. Tolkien never said that. He said that he knew that it was incorrect, but he decided to go with it because it was similar to "elves". He also acknowledge that correct plural was "dwarrows", but he didn't use it for being arcaic.

Makes sense to me. By the way, the proper plural of 'dwarf' is 'dwarrows.'

Re: “Should the plural of dwarf be dwarfs or dwarves?”, the Old English plural was dwergas. This would’ve become “dwarrows” if people didn’t start mixing it up with the singular.

I have made it halfway through the second draft of my fantasy book and have been alerted that the plural form of "dwarf" is supposed to be "dwarfs" and not "dwarves"

Dwarves or dwarrows if you want to be fancy.

If you spell it "dwarves" you are wrong. Even Tolkein was wrong. Technically even "dwarfs" is wrong. The historically correct plural is "dwarrows" But I do like the spelling of dwarves.

Hmm, how does one argue with Tolkien? I do like "dwarrows" tho just to shake things up

If the original plural of ‘dwarf’ survived, today we’d be calling dwarfs ‘dwarrows’

Especially when it’s spelled “Dwarfen” which is almost as hilarious as how we’d all be saying Dwarrows & Dwerrows right now if Tolkien was a little more harsh on his editors.

No, they’re physically “dwarves”, dwarf just means short person and was used as a slight by humans when they met the race(and so GW could have something different from dwar”ves”) That change is insubstantial, it’s like if Tolkien Had decided to name his dwarves Dwarrows instead

Deep were the dwarrows of Pyga's clan, ever they sought Pyr more fervently than all the clans of dwarves. Hotter their forges blazed and bright were their temples, for in all things they rejoiced in the heat of Hplodnar. #WIP
