“Preaching Tools: An Annotated Bibliography of Resources for Preaching Every Book of the Bible.”
This is a revision of my 175 page volume that came out in 2017. This edition is 500 pages and contains everything in the previous volume an annotated listing of every major commentary that has appeared since the previous edition. Total entries = 2700 .
Includes commentaries categorized as “Exegetical,” “Expository,” and “Devotional.” Also includes sections on “Special Studies” and “Sermons,” with a listing of forthcoming volumes. Included are older valuable works from the 1800s to commentaries published in 2026.
Here are two example listings:
Delitzsch, Franz. A New Commentary on Genesis. 2 vols. Edinburgh, 1889.
Delitzsch was a German Lutheran theologian and Hebraist. He founded an institution for training missionaries to the Jews. He is the author of numerous works, including his stupendous two volumes on Hebrews and an amazing book entitled Biblical Psychology, originally published in 1869 but reprinted by Baker in 1966. This is the translation of the 5th German edition. Wilbur Smith said it is “in some ways the greatest commentary on Genesis in any language.”
Quarles, Charles L. Matthew. EBTC. Lexham Press, 2023.
Quarles has written a balanced commentary that integrates exegesis and theology. The Evangelical Biblical Theology Commentary series emphasizes the theological message of Scripture within the canon, and Quarles fulfills this aim well. In addition to exegesis and theology, he gives attention to literary structure and historical context. Quarles consistently traces Matthean themes such as kingdom fulfillment and discipleship. The writing is clear and accessible. This volume is particularly useful for pastors seeking to connect exegesis with biblical-theological reflection. It serves as a well-rounded resource for preaching and teaching. Recommended.
Every pastor needs this volume!
