40 Years After EDSA: Still Wandering in the Political Desert
Forty years after EDSA, the painful question remains: did the Philippines truly leave the desert, or did it only change the direction of its wandering? Like the Israelites who spent 40 years in the wilderness, the nation was given a chance to break away from bondage and begin again. But freedom on paper is not the same as freedom in practice. The dictatorship ended, yet political dynasties survived. The crowds disappeared, yet corruption endured. The slogans changed, yet the hunger for power remained. EDSA was supposed to be a turning point, but four decades later, many Filipinos still feel trapped in the same cycle of deception, poverty, injustice, and historical revisionism. A people may leave one Pharaoh behind, but if they keep electing the same kind of rulers, then the desert never really ends.
